Meet Kimberly Armstrong of Posh Pretzels of Frisco in Little Elm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Armstrong.

Kimberly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Several years back I had a home-based bakery, I made cakes, cupcakes, cookies, etc. My daughter was in the musical at her elementary school and to help the incredible teachers who worked with the kids to put on the production I did a dessert concession stand that was themed to the play to help earn money…the play was The Jungle Book. One of the items that I created was a caramel wrapped pretzel, it was then dipped in orange chocolate and drizzled with dark chocolate for stripes. It was a HUGE hit!

Shortly after the production I had plans to move, so I had to pack up everything and put my business on hold. During the first year after we moved and getting things settled, I still hadn’t reopened for business. Then in the spring of 2016 my mother suddenly became ill and had to be hospitalized. I quit the part time job I was working so that I could be there for her in the hospital, but it became necessary too that I continue to have a source of income as a single mother of two.

I took the product that had become my best seller and I decided to re-brand and create my new business solely around this product, thus the birth of Posh Pretzels of Frisco. It all began with the caramel wrapped pretzel, which has since become our signature pretzel and is always a fan favorite. Now over a year later, I have a set menu of 14 additional flavors, some of them are available year-round, while others such as my pumpkin spice pretzel squares is only available seasonally. Along with the set menu of flavors and themes, I create custom orders for many clients for party favors, dessert tables and gifts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With any small business there are always hurdles to overcome, mine happened on the personal side of life. At the height of holiday season last fall, I broke my finger, which made creating my pretzels a difficult thing to do, so I had to put taking orders on hold until I was healed. At the time my biggest sellers were during holiday seasons, so that was a hard thing to have to set back from as my business was really beginning to gain momentum. As a small business, you never want to be out of sight, because then you become out of mind and when you pick back up it almost feels like you’ve started all over again.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Posh Pretzels of Frisco – what should we know?
I specialize in hand-dipped chocolate pretzels. All of my creations currently are done on pretzel rods, with the exception of my pumpkin spice pretzel squares. The pretzel that put us on the map and has become known as our signature caramel wrapped pretzel is our top seller.

I have a team of people that we call the Taste Crew and they get to taste any new creations before they’re on the market for purchase. Their feedback is essential to creating the high-quality tastes that we have become known for.

What sets me apart from others is that my business specializes in our product. I am very proud of the growth my business has had in the last year and a half, Monday, August 14th I opened a retail space in the Lone Star Mercantile, which I am extremely proud of because it is the next step in how I want to grow my business.

I was also nominated for the Best of Denton County under their Best Dessert Menu category. I am so grateful to all of my customers, friends and family who voted me into a Top 3 Finalist position.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination! Hands down, I am determined to not only succeed, but to create a consistent product that people want and love. I am a single mother of two and I want them to learn that you can chase and catch whatever you dream. I want to always make them proud and my determination to do that has helped me to accomplish all that I have in the short time my business has been opened and will continue to drive me to grow my business.
