Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Ratterree.
Kristin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out taking photos in my church nursery just as a hobby and also developing in a darkroom during high school (before digital was well established). Film photography was a great way to learn the camera functions and settings because you couldn’t see how making in camera adjustments affected the photo until you developed the film. However, as soon as I could transfer to digital photography, I did it!
My passion started off with newborns and maternity clients because I just love babies and everything around them. I expanded into birth photography (@DallasBirthPhotographer on Instagram), and that’s where all of my portrait and documentary work resides today. In 2016, I expanded my business to include fitness and sports photography after starting my personal fitness journey. At first it was pretty challenging as a new fitness photographer to capture muscles through light and action shots in sports BUT I love a challenge! After working with different competitors and trainers in the area, I started getting noticed by fitness athletes across the country and have been blessed to be able to work with some well-known athletes in the fitness industry. I was published in Flex Magazine UK last year which was an awesome accomplishment for a Texas girl, and I continue to strive for more publications and to perfect my images for my clients. My fitness and sports work can be seen on Instagram at @DallasFitnessPhotos. Reach out if you want to shoot!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With fitness photography my road has been somewhat smooth; however, I’m still to this day learning more about lighting techniques and the fitness industry in general. Since I am somewhat new to the health and fitness world, the most interesting part for me is learning about different exercises and anatomy of the muscles to be honest lol. With birth photography, it’s always somewhat exhilarating because I’m on call for weeks sometimes and then as soon as I get “the call” I have to be prepared to head to the hospital. I do have a backup photographer in case I am absolutely unable to make it but I haven’t missed a birth to this day (thank the Lord!).
K-Rae Images – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My brand is all about custom client experiences and making sure my clients get the photos they want and are excited to share them with others! Since I’m the sole owner and photographer, I make it my goal to have gushing clients, i.e. clients that are so pleased with my work/ethics/artistic abilities that they come back to me in the future and tell others about my services. I absolutely love seeing clients out and getting to photograph them and/or their families multiple times because I get to see them grow up and evolve as people. Plus, making good connections with my clients is important to me!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Proudest portrait moment – being able to photograph one of my best friend’s birth (We’ve been friends since 6th grade)! It was an honor to be in the room with her and her husband as they found out the sex of their 1st baby for the 1st time. I was in town for Easter weekend and little baby Kian came while I was there – absolutely a blessing!
Proudest fitness photography moment – being published in Flex Magazine UK with a huge spread of Rosie Rascal.
