Meet Kristin Zaldana of Self-Made Cosmetics in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Zaldana.

Kristin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can recall, skincare has been important to me, even before I knew what it really meant or that I was caring for my skin. Going back to my childhood years, I would follow my mom’s lead mixing up kitchen ingredients with her playing spa. We would sit with towels on our heads & green face masks while she would paint my nails. As I grew, this play time became a ritual that I carried on with for myself and became my time of relaxing & meditation. While in high school, I had the idea of developing my own skincare line. Because this is such a competitive industry, at that time I was encouraged to find a direction that would allow me to work within the industry rather than developing it on my own. I then went on to attend & graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising where I obtained my Associates Degree in Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing. During my time there, I was able to learn the business side of the beauty industry and had the additional resources to learn more about formulations & the benefits of ingredients. This has assisted me tremendously in the development of products & gave me strong building blocks for the foundation of Self-Made Cosmetics.

Los Angeles is a city full of health-conscious people, which I found inspiring. While living there, I started living a more natural lifestyle and became interested in the healing benefits of crystals and maintaining a positive energy. From a lifetime of learning, I already knew so much about the negative effects some of the ingredients in well-known skincare lines & how herbal/natural ingredients have so much to offer, the idea of working within another corporation just didn’t sit well with me and I knew I what I was meant to do. After graduating in March of 2018, I decided to take my new lifestyle into my business and go full-time with starting my own company. With my mom/business partner Trisha Zaldana by my side along with the strong support of my family & friends over the past few months, Self-Made Cosmetics has been my heart & soul, and I am so excited to see what’s to come in the future.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, it’s been mostly a smooth road. Of course, there have been ups & downs along the way, but nothing that couldn’t be handled. I would have to say the most struggle I’ve had would be in the product development department, especially when I would have a product I liked. For example, there would be a formula that I would fall in love with, then we would do testing on it & it wouldn’t pass so I would have to go back to the drawing board.

Please tell us about Self-Made Cosmetics.
Self-Made Cosmetics is a natural, hand-made skin care company that focuses on making products to make women feel more confident in themselves. Being self-made is more than just hand-making the product ourselves but making sure that as people & as a company, we are staying true to ourselves & making something of what we have within us. As a company, I am most proud of the message that we’re trying to send. Especially, as a 19-year-old, it’s so easy to let others get to you, but I want others to hear our message & believe in themselves as much as I do. Through our face & body care, I think our product offering is what sets us apart from others as we offer products that contain crystals or have been infused with crystals for energy healing benefits, as well as products with ingredients that nourish for maximum skin care benefits.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be doing other people’s makeup for different events. I was always the “makeup artist” of my friend group & I always had such a good time making other people feel good about themselves.
