Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTamara Buggs.
LaTamara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sugamamas was born during a pretty rough time in my life. My husband and were struggling financially and the thought of having a lavish birthday for my daughter was laughable! But I was persistent, and I wanted what I wanted! I took some classes at “YouTube University” and learned a few things. I did the dessert table for my daughter’s party, it was a mess, but people seemed to love it and then the orders started coming.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth? Lol, what’s that? My journey has had many bumps along the way. Being a business owner, a black business owner, is very hard. We are held to a much higher standard than our corporate counterparts.
Early on, as I was still learning and perfecting my craft, it was really hard. I would get downright drugged if I didn’t produce perfection! I had to develop a really tough skin and learn that it is ok to say no. At the end of the day, all money ain’t good money!
Please tell us about Sugamamas.
Sugamamas is a home-based bakery that specializes in all things sweet! If it’s sweet, we make it! At this point, I am most proud of my cakes! I have grown tremendously, and I feel like I can tackle just about anything you put in front of me! The thing that sets me apart from others is my ability to work with just about all budgets! For the most part, I can make happen with any budget!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I definitely would have taken more time to study my craft. I think a lot of my mistakes early on were simply due to lack of knowledge.
