Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Henry.
Lauryn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
A little less than two years ago, I started my fashion and lifestyle blog, Lauryn Lately Blog. I was a fairly recent college graduate working on my MBA and trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life. After realizing that my personal life lacked the creativity that I desired, on a whim, I started my blog. I took my love for helping others and all things fashion and combined it into a fashion & lifestyle blog. At first, the blog was strictly just for fun- something that I could do in my (very little) free time to give my brain a break. After about a year, the blog started to take off and I began getting more involved with it- attending events, meeting others in the industry, spending time learning how I could be a better resource for others, and my favorite… getting to know those that followed me on a more personal level. I can honestly say that I am addicted to it! There is no better feeling than knowing that I can take my passion and use it to help others in a creative way. The blogging/ social media influencer industry is truly booming and I am so thankful and grateful to be a part of it!
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road and to be honest, I don’t think it ever will be! The industry is constantly changing and there are different struggles at different milestones throughout the journey. For instance, initially, it was incredibly hard for me to start- I was worried about what those close to me might think, worried that I would fail, and worried that I wouldn’t know how to improve. Thankfully, I had an amazing support system and spent a ton of time researching how to get started and actually be successful at blogging (still working on this!)
Once I got started, the hardest part was finding out how to set myself apart. Forever thinking “how is what I’m doing any different than what all the other bloggers are doing?” and “how can I stand out in a saturated industry?” I also struggled with photos. I would bribe my sweet parents, my little brother, my (now) fiancé, and anyone else that would give me ten minutes of their time to snap a few images of me (typically in front of my parent’s garage door or anyone else nearby- but hey you’ve got to start somewhere!).
And now, I have over 13.2k followers and I am SO far from being where I’d like to be blog-wise, but I now have the confidence in myself and the drive to push myself to get to that point. I still struggle with working a full-time job, making time for friends and family, planning a WEDDING (!!), and blogging on top of that. It’s not easy and there are many days where I sit back and think how exhausted I am or how my blog is not growing quickly enough. But when I look back at how far I have come, I am so proud of myself.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Lauryn Lately Blog is a fashion and lifestyle blog that focuses on inspiring young women to be the best version of themselves. Through fashion tips and lifestyle advice, plus a behind the scenes look at my own personal life (the good, the bad, and the ugly), I aim to be a resource for young women through whatever stage in life that they may be battling. Life is SO tough y’all and I am convinced no one should have to go through the ups and downs alone. It is my hope that my followers see that “hey she goes through this kind of stuff too- here’s how she did it.” I think we are better collectively and if I can lend any amount of advice to someone that seeks it, then that’s what I am going to do.
I think what sets me apart from others in the industry is that I truly care to know my followers on a deeper level. Direct messages from my followers are always answered (never “lost”- like many in the industry claim) and I will sit up into the wee hours of the morning to make sure that that happens. I know personally I have reached out to bloggers before and never heard anything back from them and that’s not how I want Lauryn Lately to be run and it will NEVER be that way.
I am proud of this small business that I have created for many reasons, but I’m most proud of my continued sense of realness- if it’s happening in my life, I’m going to do my best to share it with my followers and I am proud to say that I think I’ve been pretty good about doing so.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Oh gosh, I wish I knew the answer to this! Right now, I am trying to work at not putting all my eggs into one basket. Who knows if Instagram will even be around in the next ten years! The only thing I can do is make sure that I am striving to be better and make sure that I am staying in the “know” when it comes to social media changes.
For my blog, I am sure as I get older- get married, hopefully, have children, etc. my blog will look a little different throughout those stages in my life. But as a whole, I hope that in 5-10 years, I have organically grown a larger following and who knows- maybe I will even have the chance to partner with more of my favorite brands. One of the best parts about this business is that you just never really know what to expect and it definitely keeps you guessing.
