Meet Lola Lott of charlieuniformtango

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lola Lott.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lola. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1989 Jack Waldrip, a very talented video editor, and I developed a postproduction process that became the model for modern editorial facilities by integrating all facets of the process. Combining AVID (one of the first non-linear computer based editing systems), online editing, graphic design, and audio under one roof we created an optimal postproduction environment. The dream was to bring together the best talent for each discipline and thus create a team of specialists–all working in tandem for the best possible results. The system proved phenomenally successful, and by 1995, we knew it was time to open our own place. We named it charlieuniformtango…CUT, the military radio call letters for charlieuniformtango (editing is called cutting, hence CUT).

In 2008, we announced the formation of Liberal Media Films. Although branded as an independent production company, LMF functioned as an integral part of charlieuniformtango.

We anticipated the many benefits of single-source production years ago. The seamless integration of all aspects of video production into one, efficient resource not only makes life easier for clients, it helps maintain the creative integrity, consistency, and quality of every project.

Today, our industry understands single-source. And so, in the spirit of efficiency and artful editing, we cut the name Liberal Media Films in 2016, and we are all now charlieuniformtango.

We are headquartered in Dallas, and have a full-service office in Austin.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our industry – making commercials and commercial films – is strongly influenced by the state of the economy. During the recession of 2009, many companies slashed their ad spending, and that affected us. But, by offering single-source production, we were able to make the most of our clients’ budgets, and that approach continues to pay dividends for them, and for us, today. We are constantly working to anticipate what industry changes are coming, and we make adjustments to meet those changes during the slowest times. That takes courage, but it’s always paid off for us to be intuitive to what is needed.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the charlieuniformtango story. Tell us more about the business.
If you watch TV, you’ve seen our work. We partner with corporate clients and advertising agencies throughout the country to take their broadcast messages from concept to finished product. When people think of the film industry, they tend to think of Los Angeles or New York. We’re right here in Texas, and we work with national and international clients like Chick-fil-A, GEICO, American Airlines, Fiat, and Dr Pepper. Many of our commercials have been shown during Super Bowls, and we’re proud to say we’ve won numerous national industry awards, including Cannes Lions.

charlieuniformtango serves as a single source production solution. Yes, it’s an efficient way to do business, but it’s much more about providing individual top-notch creative services under one roof.

Our company directs, produces, shoots, edits, scores, mixes, animates, and provides motion graphic design, color services, VFX, and finishing for commercials, short films, full-length feature films, documentaries, music videos, and digital content for clients worldwide.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Most companies would say it’s their people. But, it really is for us. Our employees are our main recruiters of new talent and no one wants to let down their friends in the business. That has proven to be hugely successful for us. The average employee tenure is more than 15 years, and with 40 employees, that says a lot.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Technology drives our industry; it’s always changing and evolving.

I think one of the most exciting things on the horizon is the coming wave of Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Though AR has been gaining steam in recent years, this year marks a turning point for the technology, which blends digital objects with live photo and video on mobile devices. This is in part fueled by Apple’s new iOS 11, which features their new ARKit development framework, allowing for AR content. The examples I’ve seen so far indicate that this cutting-edge technology is the next frontier for creative content. I can’t wait to see how people use it once they get their hands on it, and we’re all eager to create experiences for this next generation format.
