Meet Lori Feil

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Feil.

Lori, before we jump into specific questions about the organization, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I founded Pajama Rama in 2013 after my daughter had an accident and was rushed to the children’s hospital via ambulance. After the accident, I felt an urgency to give back to the hospital/community. I looked at the hospital’s website and, on their need/wish list in big bold print, was “PAJAMAS.” Oprah calls this an “ah ha” moment. I like to call it a God thing as the light bulb went off in my mind. I thought, “I can hold a pajama drive,” and with that Pajama Rama was created. Our mission is to help provide comfort and hope to children in need with the gift of new pajamas.

During our first pajama drive, we had one donation box and collected 130 new pajamas that were delivered to Cook Children’s Medical Center. Fast forward six years later, and we have nearly 30 community sponsors throughout DFW. We have collected thousands of pajamas that have been delivered to Cook Children’s Medical Center, TX Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, Children’s Health Dallas & Plano, Ft. Worth Ronald McDonald House, Community Partners of Dallas, Children’s Advocacy Center, and Samaritan House. Since 2013, we have provided comfort to nearly 6,000 children in need.

I have spent many nights in the children’s hospital with my daughter and can tell you firsthand how something as simple as pajamas can truly make a difference. It changed her affect by making her feel better while she was very sick. Our goal is to help provide comfort and a sense of home to children feeling at their worst while hospitalized.

Upon working with various community outreach organizations, I also discovered that many children have never owned a pair of pajamas. We have seen children in these situations hug their new pajamas as if they were hugging a teddy bear. Many parents do not have the luxury of buying pajamas and their children go to bed in the clothes that they wore all day. Our goal is to provide a comfortable night’s sleep to bring a hopeful tomorrow. I honestly feel that the simple act of giving pajamas and showing children that you care can positively impact their life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest bump in the road was in 2018. I wanted to turn Pajama Rama into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization but the paperwork alone was terrifying. I had to push past my fears and go for it. I’m so thankful that I did not let fear limit my dreams of helping children in need. I’m happy to report that as of August 2018, Pajama Rama is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It takes a village to make Pajama Rama a success. We couldn’t do it without the help of our community, sponsors, and donors that believe in our mission to help provide comfort and hope to children in need with the gift of new pajamas.

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Each year Pajama Rama has a pajama drive. Our community sponsors include schools, churches, and businesses. They host our community Pajama Rama boxes for a 4 to 6-week period. After the donations are collected and counted, they are delivered to children in need. I’m proud of the organization that Pajama Rama has become.

We have not only provided comfort to children within our community, but we also spent some time in New York. Mrs. Panos, a Kindergarten Coordinator, reached out to us and told us that her students are in need and asked if we could help. She told us that “many of the children live in low income housing and their parents do not have the luxury of buying nice things like pajamas for them.” Pajama Rama provided all 106 kindergartners with brand new pajamas! One little boy said, “my mom is going to be so happy.” The joy on the children’s faces when they received their new pajamas was priceless.

Since 2013, we have provided comfort to nearly 6,000 children in need with the gift of new pajamas. Our compassion to help provide comfort to children that are hurting or lacking sets us apart from other organizations. A simple act of kindness can truly make a difference in the lives of the children we serve.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I think that the sky is the limit for Pajama Rama, and it is up to us as a community to help children in need. As our organization grows, I hope we can help more children in our community and throughout the U.S. We are always looking for community sponsors and donors to allow us to impact more children.
