Meet Alex Maxwell of Mad Lexicon Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Maxwell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alex. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It took me a long time to come into my own and accept that despite my years and years of traditional academia, the path I originally chose was not one I wanted to continue.

Completely breaking down what I always thought I was and my assumed capabilities gave me a fresh start to recreate my life exactly to my specifications. Taking the good and scrapping the bad I became determined to never be complacent or stagnant again. I was absolutely holding myself back when I should and could have acted as a self advocate embracing growth along the way.

When I originally opened my company it never occurred to me that I could actually own and design a fashion line. I never anticipated all the tiny aspects that go into building a successful business and how each distribution center or manufacturer’s values must align with what I am so passionate about.

Now humbled, in awe, and thankful for my tribulations, I thrive in chaos as the shake up gives me millions of opportunities to alter my path both personally and professionally.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some styles are simply horrible for everyone, and sometimes it takes time and tenacity to locate the best starting canvas to accommodate different bodies and tastes. Never sacrificing and persistence has really helped us gain respect and grow. (Don’t worry, I scrapped the horrible shirts!)

It took a lot of time and work to confidently stand behind my artistic merit and develop my brand to where it is at now. By creating my own business and thus a unique niche in the apparel industry, I had to accept full responsibility for any failures and bask in each success without stopping my forward trajectory. We are very much still growing, but now at such a rapid pace I’ve been taken aback.

Heed my warning now, the iPhone seven can produce a very sad potato quality photo without proper lighting. Shooting in bars after closing with the most unique group of friends was a blast and fantastic learning experience! We’re excited to have another photo shoot soon in Dallas.

Despite the struggles (Greatness does not come easily or to the faint of heart.) I am thrilled to wake up every day and live a life fuller than I ever imagined.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mad Lexicon Design – what should we know?
Our pieces, whether it be apparel or accessories, are truly a work of art. We start with the highest quality products and we pride ourselves on adding tiny touches of luxury unparalleled in other brands. I firmly believe receiving a package should evoke excitement and we really enjoy playing with anticipation during unboxing. We love the innovative, environmentally and ethically conscious production companies we partner with. Inclusivity whether it be by size* or LGBTQ+ is huge for us. You can really feel the love and happiness woven and pressed in each super soft article, only to gain more memories when you are able to confidently don them thinking of adventures instead of body or fit insecurities other clothes can easily induce. We love getting custom orders and feedback, so stop by and say hello!

*Especially size inclusivity has been a tricky sea to navigate. As a big (…ger?) lesbian I understand just how much this suck. I can’t or can barely wear a lot of my own designs that I adore and (completely willingly) slave over. I’m fighting for us and am currently in communications with production companies about their practices and solutions. Email me if you need a different size and will do my best to find a solution before change is made.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wonderful partner, Dorian Reinhardt, in business adventures and life has done everything by my side taking on the techie website design role as well as joining me artistically producing many shirts on the site. She keeps me sane, and she keeps me wild.

I have the richest group of family, and friends who are continually supportive, push for my success, and have helped me grow into the entrepreneur I am today. (Many of them also helped model for us as well! It was a beautiful night that really made me know I had something amazing happening in my life.) So thanks y’all, you guys know who you are.
