Meet Madison Mentesana of Madison Katlin Photography in Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Mentesana.

Madison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I took my first photography class when I was a sophomore in high school. I fell in love with it but convinced myself it would always be a hobby, I never thought I would be able to make it a career. Throughout the remainder of high school and college, I shot photos for my friends, family events, and everything in between. After graduating college with an education degree, a short stint in Uganda with the Peace Corps, and a year teaching, I decided I wanted to try something else. I was longing for a career change, so I jumped and followed my heart.

The past three years, I worked at two marketing agencies doing product photography and social media. During that time, I also slowly but surely started growing my freelance photography, specializing in influencers and products. Fast forward to 2018 and I was a full blown photographer, living the dream I never thought was possible. As I continued to work at an agency while also freelancing, I began to realize that there was something missing. That something was the direction I wanted to take my photography.

I have forever been a hopeless romantic so deciding that the ultimate goal of mine was to be Wedding & Couple photographer seemed natural. The more time I spent with couples and getting to witness their love, the more I was hooked. It was like getting to watch a romantic movie over and over again each week. I knew this is where my passion for photography was.

Eight months ago, I left the agency I was working for to go full-time for myself as Madison Katlin Photography. I now get to exclusively pursue weddings and couple’s shoots. Every day, I have to pinch myself that this is my dream job. I am so thankful to be where I am, and to have the support I have. There is nothing more gratifying that than being able to capture people’s raw emotions and make a career out of it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! From learning how to shoot products to people and then transitioning to weddings, I have had to learn (and still learning) a ton. I have invested a lot of time, money, and tears into my career. Every little bit has been so worth it and has gotten me to where I am now.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
OMG, the list is endless. My family, specifically my parents and my Fiance. They have been with me through the good and the bad. I also am thankful for my friends. In the current state of my career, it can be difficult to pull away and be able to have a social life. My friends have always been encouraging and understanding. They are so great to me. and OBVIOUSLY, my dog Brinkley has been so supportive. He spends every day by my side while I edit and answer emails!
