Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Argueta.
Maria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started making paper flowers because I wanted to decorate my daughter’s room I saw them on Instagram and they looked beautiful. Soon after I took pictures and posted them on my Instagram account my family and friends loved them and immediately asked if I was selling them ( I was known for selling baking treats and such) I didn’t think of them as being something I could sell. So soon after I looked at website to see how I could better myself at making them and I did and so it did.
I had always wanted to have my little business to sell from home and get to spend time with my kids and do what I love pioneering. Pioneering is one of my full-time privilege, to talk to people about the Bible and helping others to read it is one of my full-time commitment. So I thought making flowers and selling them would be great and it would give me time to work from home and do what I love. It was a long journey but I was determined I knew I could do it if I didn’t give up, I had to learn new techniques, how to market my product, and stay on track because it’s easy to get frustrated and not want to keep going. My family and friends have been a great support.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes indeed!! Many in fact, one of them is TIME! paper flowers take a large amount of time in creating them and it’s only me that’s making them so at first, it was very time consuming and it left me with very overwhelmed at the end of the day. Also finding the right paper provider was a bit of a hassle because I was investing more money than what I was making, the paper I use to make the flowers is durable and buying in small quantities was getting expensive. So at first, it did not go quite as I planned.
I sat down and said to myself I have to be more Organized! And that is what I did I started managing the business since it was just me I started tackling small orders at one time not taking more than I couldn’t handle. Being more clever when it came to pricing. A friend of told me “Maria you have to work smarter not harder” so really if I wanted to make beautiful flowers and give the best of me I had to be reasonable with my self even if it’s just two or three orders a week. It’s ok because they would be made with care and not give rushed work. So being reasonable and organized was my key.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Katy’s Flower Wall story. Tell us more about your work.
I make paper flowers. I specialize in creating beautiful flowers out of paper which are used for special events or home decor. I am best known for making backdrops. What I am most proud of my company is that I really put my heart onto the craft and creativity that goes into my flowers.
What sets me apart from others is everything. Every paper florist that I have had the privilege of knowing have their own kind of creativity so we all have different techniques and our flowers, of course, are very different but we all try and give our customers the best and the love we express thru our art.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Trends are always changing so what is trending now may not be trending in a few years but what never goes out of style is your personal creativity. One of the most exciting changes for me is shipping so far I have been doing local but I have received out of state orders and am looking forward to start on that project.
Definitely, marketing is a big change collaborating with well-known names around town will be a big thing. And I can’t forget about collaborating with other vendors they are what helped me grow knowing vendors and helping each other out.
- I always have monthly sells. Like 6 flowers for 50$ or such but it’s only for that month
- Also have allot of give aways.
