Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Maverick.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from a long line of “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” type people. I had a love for beautiful photography and found myself wanting to learn to take pictures. In 2012 I started Sarah Maverick Photography. I had no idea who I was, what I wanted, or what my “why” was. But I did know I loved photography. Many times I would tell myself that I needed to learn it better, and get better but I just didn’t have time and I was “good enough” to get by. Life has a funny way of stopping you dead in your tracks. on July 4th weekend of 2017 I suffered a bi lateral pulmonary embolism while pregnant and came very close to losing me and my child’s life. Laying in the hospital, not knowing what would happen I had a lot of time to think. I made a couple promises to myself. The first one that no matter what else happened, if I made it out of this, I would take more pictures with my kids. No matter what I thought I looked like or how I was feeling. It. Is. Important. The second, was that I was really going to devote my energy into being a great photographer and making this a successful business because now I had a BIG why. I want to make sure other mom’s and women know the importance of documenting their life and really how much memories matter. Organic moments are beautiful and deserve to be celebrated. The quote by John Lennon holds true that “Life is what happens when we’re to busy making other plans.” Don’t let those moments pass you by. As this article goes to press we will have just released Maverick Organic Art Co. This labor of love wrapped in a tight twine of pure passion is me living what I believe in my purpose and keeping that promise to myself. Every customer leaves with a new friend, a piece of my heart and soul, a new found appreciation for all of these big little moments, and hopefully a laugh.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say running a business as an artist is never a smooth road. An artist that is trying to run a passion based business can sometimes lose track of the fact that it is a business. I love to give stuff away and shoot for pure enjoyment and not money. To me, that is always the internal struggle as an artist running a business.
I would say it was really hard to find my voice in the past. Knowing exactly what I wanted to do, what I wanted to represent, and who I wanted to be in this industry. After the embolism, that thing became crystal clear. I am nothing but grateful for all the bumps along the way. Without the bumps, you wouldn’t recognize the smooth road. (Which I still am not on!)
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Maverick Organic Art Co. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Maverick Organic Art Co. specializes in intimate mother child photography, raw female portraiture, and unscripted child portraiture. We use bold colors and emotional editing to tell the story that is your life.
We believe that the time is now, you are worthy of celebration, and your moments matter. We document the raw and natural beauty that is you. Oh and we also specialize in lots and lots of laughing.
As a company, I am most proud of the impact my photos have had on women clients, especially moms. Whether it is a special session for their child, a bare beauty session for them(which they boldly do without makeup!) or our intimate mother child session, there is very rarely a time that I do not hear that they left in a better place than they came.
I call it soul work. That’s the business that we are in. To sprinkle a little bit of shine on a woman.
If in some small way I have affected a woman’s life on a level that she feels better about all of this life stuff after leaving me, there is no greater honor than that. There is nothing that makes me more proud.
I believe my client connections set me apart from the crowd. Because this is such a labor of love for me, I think that rubs off on them. There is never a photo that my hand doesn’t touch, never a gallery that I didn’t put my soul into. They get 100% me. I think in this day and age, that is rare. Oh also I like the really bad kids. Like the really bad ones that drive their parents crazy. Yeah, those kids are my jam.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Hopefully no big changes for a while as I feel confident that we have found our home in Maverick Organic Art Co.
We will be beginning to offer birth stories at the beginning of 2019 and for me that is super exciting!
