Meet Mia McDaniel, The Skin Enthusiast of ZenSkin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia McDaniel.

Mia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2013, I started my Insurance Career in my hometown of Atlanta. I received a promotion to relocate to Seattle in 2014 and then another promotion to come to Plano in 2015. I doubled my salary, had a chance to relocate myself and my daughter and experience new lives, however, I wasn’t happy.

I’ve always been into skincare since I was younger and I even dubbed myself a “skin enthusiast.” I started a YouTube channel in 2016, to showcase different lipsticks and simple routines for moms. For a few months, I enjoyed the process, but I realized that I started to look at YouTube gurus in envy. They had great lighting, excellent content, and I had nothing close. I started feeling insecure the need to put on makeup every day.

I went through a bad breakup and decided to end my YouTube journey and focus on me. I knew that I wanted women to feel beautiful regardless of their make up choices. I wanted women to glow from the inside out, so I created the name ZenSkin Co. I wanted affirmations which were affixed to the bottle and to be said every time you apply the body glow oil.

Anyone I met, I’d tell them that I was the owner of ZenSkin Co. I had no product, an Instagram business page with one picture and no clients. I continued to work in an industry I loathed. But, I still was used as a consultant by my friends with their skincare concerns.

In 2018, I decided to finally put my words into action. I put my Body Glow Oil in a wellness bag along with the affirmation and hoped for the best. But, truthfully, I still wasn’t ready to really do the work. After the wellness event, I didn’t touch my product again until December 2018.

November 28, 2018 – I was fired from my job which was a blessing in disguise. I was unhappy and always said I wanted to leave Insurance by the age of 30. I turned 30 on May 5th, and six months later, I received my blessing. December 5, 2018, I officially started my brand, and the rest is history!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy road at all! I changed the formula of the Body Glow Oil, and it was a disaster. The pigments coagulated and I got complaints left and right. People were understanding, but I had to make it right.

I reformulated the product and sent out 20 replacement bottles. It hit my pockets hard! Think $3.50 in shipping TIMES 20, PLUS the product itself. However, I learned a valuable lesson early on. My honesty with my customers and willingness to make it right brought more sales because the customers trusted me.

ZenSkin Co. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
ZenSkin Co. is an all natural skincare company designed for each person to create their glow. Based on the belief that beauty comes from within, I create affirmations that are to be read each time one applies the product.

I specialize in a glow oil which is pigmented according to the skin complexion ranging from fair to deep. I recently released, “Seductive Haze,” which is a unisex body butter with a woodsy fragrance of tobacco, vanilla, and mango. I’ve had great success in these past two months, and I am always learning.

One thing that has made me most proud is the support I’ve gained. I didn’t realize the work that I’ve been putting in for years was actually creating my foundation. The self-therapy, the patience, basically being a skin consultant has launched me into a position where those around me have given me a great platform.

What sets me apart from other businesses is that I’m not afraid to be in front of the camera. I am personal, I’m honest, and I’m very transparent. My vulnerability has been able to place me in a position where many business people are scared to go because we think it makes us look weak when actually, it’s the opposite.

I can’t wait to share what else is to come from ZenSkin Co.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My success is those around me. It’s the women who come back and say they feel more confident. It’s the people I end up conversing with in my messages on Instagram who thank me for my vulnerability. But most of all, it’s the single mothers like myself who I have seen step up and step out into their passion.

I started my YouTube channel years ago for women like me who felt like they didn’t have time to be “pretty.” When in actuality, pretty is so subjective. It means nothing if on the inside you don’t feel like yourself.

So the conversations I share with them is my success.
