Meet Michelle Blackard of Team Drum Coaching in Mid-Cities, Grapevine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Blackard.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started coaching runners at the start of 2017 after many years of wondering if it was the right step for me. I had coached friends throughout the years but still wasn’t sure that my voice was the one people would willingly turn to for running and training advice. Finally realizing that I had thought about it every day for years, that MY little voice wasn’t going away, I took a leap of faith and started Team Drum Coaching. I’ve been a runner for 20+ years and it has been an honor to share the experience and knowledge I’ve gained over those years with my athletes.

Has it been a smooth road?
I wanted my coaching business to be one that grew organically and by word of mouth instead of going crazy with advertisements and pushing it on people. The most important thing to me is that my athletes always feel supported so growth isn’t hugely important to me. I want to make sure that I always have time to give them the attention they deserve. I’ve changed training platforms a few times and I’ve changed the way I communicate a few times over the last two years but otherwise, it’s been a pretty smooth road!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Team Drum Coaching story. Tell us more about the business.
Team Drum Coaching’s mission is to nurture you, the athlete, as you find your way to new adventures, self-discovery, and growth. More than just a training plan, I aim to be that person in your corner that believes in you and celebrates with you while helping to navigate the day to day challenges that come from trying to juggle it all.

My training plans are very individualized to the athlete, we’ll start from where you currently are and work from there. There is not just one way to train. I believe in consistency, staying injury free, and loving the run. If you stop having fun on a training plan, it’s not the plan for you! I look over your data but I am not a slave to it, most of your runs you will do by feel. Strength work, mobility work, and cross-training are all aspects of my training programs.

My training plans work with your schedule and your LIFE. Running is not something you have to do, it’s something you WANT to do. You’re willing to make time for it and you’re serious enough about your goals to hiring a coach. I take you and your training very seriously, that includes living your life and everything that makes up your day.

I’m most proud of the relationships that I develop with the runners I coach. They are putting their faith in me to make them stronger, fitter, faster athletes. I take that responsibility very seriously. I work hard to make sure they know that I’m there for them. I think they also really appreciate that I’ve been there too. I’ve had the bad workout, the bad race, the horrible day. I know what it feels like to shake off those bad days and conquer a workout and a race.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’m working on using YouTube more in my coaching, I’ve started a channel called The Team Drum Show! As time goes on, I hope to invest in higher quality video equipment and start interviewing the runners I coach as well as local runners.

Runners contact me looking to improve upon their road running personal bests. Some are also looking to venture into trail running and ultra running. I love and have experience on both roads and trails and I think my athletes like that they can jump around within the sport as well. It’s good for the body, mind, and soul to experience new challenges!
