Meet Miranda Derks and Heather Keating of Shitty Dog Moms in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Derks and Heather Keating.

Miranda and Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We owe it all to Benji. Our story started in the dog park at our apartment complex. We’d never met before and were new Dallas, looking for friends. One day Heather’s dog Benji decided to “mark” me and that is how the story begins. Fast forward one year, four dogs, one fist fight, and many MANY white claws later…. We became inseparable and realized all we did was talk about our dogs.

Naturally we searched for dog mom related podcasts and found none that were interesting for millennials. We realized that there was an opportunity for us to drink white claws and chat about our dogs for other like minded dog parents.

The story behind the name “Shitty Dog Mom’s” is this: Our social lives revolve around them and we invest so much time and care into giving our rescues (Zeek, Benji, Oakley, and Stella) the best lives that we possibly can. Despite all of that they still sometimes make us feel like we are shitty dog moms.

We are just your average 20 something Dallas dog moms trying to save all the puppers! We upload every Wednesday with stories and rants about dogs, friendships, and life in a comedic tone to connect with fellow dog parents; our audience enjoys the personal conversation format that our episodes have.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our biggest hurdle to overcome was figuring out just how a podcast actually works. We are self-taught when it comes to the back end of podcasting and we are learning along the way! COVID-19 had thrown some curveballs and kept us apart, but we learned how to record remotely and didn’t skip a beat!

Shitty Dog Moms – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our name most definitely sets us apart – We are far from actual “shitty” dog moms, but we wanted something that was relatable to our audience and generation. We talk about our dogs for the most part, but we also weave in our own crazy life experiences to make it feel more like a conversation. Having four dogs we’ve experienced many different experiences and challenges. We are not animal professionals giving medical advice, we are dog moms who have learned helpful tips and tricks to share with our listeners. We started the brand to talk about the importance of adopting vs buying. We are most proud of how we feature adoption stories from listeners and dogs that are adoptable in the DFW area. Our goal is to help all the puppers.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What don’t we like? We live near the Bishop Arts community and enjoy how dog friendly it is. We talk about our favorite DFW local businesses throughout our podcast and try to create relationships with the owners. There’s a great sense of community in DFW and felt very welcome from day one!

In our podcast we talk about the stereotypical “Brads, Chads, Kyles, and Karens” that we run into throughout DFW and how they make us feel. Karens by far are the ones who get us going on rants. If you’ve listened to our episodes you know our number one thing we dislike in the city of Dallas is PEOPLE WHO DON’T PICK UP AFTER THEIR DOGS!
