Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Feighner Jenness.
Molly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After my own wedding in 2014, I realized that I didn’t want the party to end. I met so many talented vendors and people, I wanted to continue those wonderful relationships. Having freelanced for many years, I had the perfect opportunity and timing to launch Fingerprint Designs, which I did in a week’s time. I’ve never looked back. My philosophy is pretty simple, I believe every couple or client deserves perfectly custom designs, specific to only them – hence the tagline, uniquely you. I do all the illustration, painting, drawings and design from scratch. I never use templates or pre-fabricated designs. Each design is especially tailored to meet each client’s desires. And once printed, designs are retired. They will never be used again. My bottom line is making people happy. Don’t get me wrong, the money is nice, but what I most enjoy is seeing amazed and happy faces when I reveal the final product. That strategy seems to be working out well – I’ve never advertised since all my clients come by word-of-mouth and they keep me plenty busy!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
All in all, it’s been a pretty smooth road. I’ve yet to have anyone be unhappy with my designs or products (knock on wood!) so I think I’m doing a fairly good job in sticking to what my bottom line really is – making people happy. I didn’t have much in the way of start-up costs since I am a designer (both print and web) so the beginning was super-smooth compared to other start-up stories I’ve heard!
Struggles? I really can’t complain. Most of my customers are referred to me by someone I’ve either worked with previously or networked with, so the relationships I develop have solid foundations. I think my only struggle at the moment is whether to bring on another member to join my company (it’s always been just me running/designing everything) I have a tendency to be a bit obsessive about quality and content, so it’s hard to delegate for me. One of these days, I’ll have to build a team with the rate I’m growing!
Please tell us about a little more about Fingerprint Designs.
Fingerprint Designs does only custom work, ever. I don’t copy other designer’s works, I don’t use templates so every design is completely unique. What sets me apart a bit more is that I do not mark up printing costs – my clients pay what I pay for printing. And clients benefit from the relationships I’ve developed with my printers to gain even more economy.
“Custom” does not need to mean “expensive.” I can compete with online retailers easily and my clients receive completely custom artwork. I don’t specialize in any one area, I can do it all – from letterpress to laser-cut and from digital to engraving – if my clients can dream it up, I can do it – with style and economy!
As a company, I’m very proud of how far I’ve come in such a short period of time. I didn’t expect this level of success so quickly – it’s amazing and I’m extremely grateful for it all!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would do anything differently – my company is flourishing, my client base continues to grow and my reputation is one that I thoroughly enjoy.
