Meet Newt Burris of MeCantName

Today we’d like to introduce you to Newt Burris.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was in second grade, I learned that I greatly enjoyed entertaining people, so I started imitating Jim Carrey to make my friends laugh. There was a define moment where I discovered my love of entertaining people. I remember feeling “Holy shit, I really like making people laugh!” and from then on I wanted to be an actor!

I then went on to act in school, in the, and in actual drama class. Years later, I started to work as an actor at a haunted house for the last 15 years. In 2009, I started a YouTube channel under the name MeCantName, which is a small story on its own. I strove to make really weird videos that made me laugh. I lost my drive to make film/videos on YouTube; really, for many reasons, one being the overall bullshit political climate of YouTube. I feel like that sounds dumb to say, but unfortunately, it is THE world of video on the Internet now.

The other reason is I was growing increasingly tired of being a one-man crew. Having to make everything on my own started to be very boring. During my existential crisis of me losing interest in the one art form that drove me for so many years, I was invited to tag along on a photo shoot. I thought it would be interesting to bring my camera along to try out photography. I had more fun than I expected. I went from having the opinion about photography being a lower form of visual art compared to filmmaking.

To have the opinion that photography could be very fun, interesting and new way for me to create art and express through this new media. I’ve obviously found new styles and techniques that differ from my filmmaking background. I particularly enjoy street style photography as it has so far been the most difficult style of photography I have tried. I have also discovered my love for film photography, which I had always known subconsciously would be an obsession.

I have now come to confirm that suspicion. Currently, I spend most of my time shooting almost exclusively film. Despite what form of photography I choose I love the challenge of trying to master as many different styles of photography as I can.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The skills I learned is a photographer surprisingly translated up well to photography. The only thing I had to learn was capturing what I wanted in a single frame.

MeCantName – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is me, as a photographer, under the name MeCantName.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The most proud I am when it comes to my work Is when someone tells me that my art has affected them. I don’t necessarily even care how it affected them, just that it affected them at all makes me very happy!
