Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Flores.
Patty, before we jump into specific questions about your business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Before I began in the body art industry, I was in the fashion industry for 25 years. I owned my own specialty clothing and tattoo shops in LA for over a decade. A good friend of mine had his own tattoo shop in Hollywood and encouraged me to apprentice under him as a piercer. In 2018 I moved to Texas for more opportunity. McKinney stole my heart right away and I knew it was where I wanted to open my own piercing studio. My first couple of years in Texas were spent piercing in a tattoo shop in Dallas. As soon as I saw a place open up on the downtown McKinney square I jumped on it. I could not be happier that I waited for the perfect spot! The town has been so welcoming and I feel so blessed to be here. One big challenge has been the stark difference in regulations in the body art industry in Texas compared to California. My main aspirations are to continue to teach others about the importance of caring for their piercings, maintaining integrity in my craft, and of course making clients feel magical with their new piercings!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to open up a business. There was nothing convenient about the timing, so I had to make huge sacrifices. I have to thank my friend Janelle the realtor for finding the place, my niece Ashley for designing the website, my friend Tracy and former boss Evelyn for helping financially, and my husband Jimmy for standing by my side and pulling everything together. I couldn’t have done it without him! The opportunity fell in my lap when I was unprepared. My background in business definitely gave me the skill I needed to make opening up the studio go as smoothly as possible.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Here at The Magic Needle, I specialize in all kinds of body piercings. My clients always appreciate how much time and care I put in to ensuring the placement of their piercing is best suited to compliment their specific features. People are always amazed at how quick and painless the process is. My service really stands out from others’ because I have carried the regulations enforced in California with me and no one leaves my shop unaware of how to properly care for their piercing. I always guarantee my work and I have built a loyal client base by consistently delivering great results. I am most proud of my quickly growing reputation as the piercer to come to for a beautiful piercing, or less fortunately the place to come if need a poorly done piercing fixed!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment so far has definitely been opening The Magic Needle. Looking back, I am so proud of all my accomplishments that have led me to this point because I did not grow up in a privileged environment. It took a lot of hard work to get where I am now and the payoff has been very rewarding. I am so thankful to my mother for being such a hard working woman and showing me that you can build yourself up from nothing if you are determined. I truly believe I am a great example of the American Dream!
