Today we’d like to introduce you to Preston Ward.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Preston. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
One of the owners is a practicing licensed attorney who has a love for fireworks and providing that “wow” moment at weddings, special events, and city displays. When he was getting married, he wanted a display at his wedding, but being fresh out of law school and paying for the wedding himself, it definitely did not fit in the budget. It is the one thing he would go back and change if he could, so he wants to make sure each client can have that moment. The second owner is a mixed media artist who has a love for animation and has taken his passion through multiple styles of media such as film, lighting, and now fireworks. Both owners share a love for animated Christmas light displays, and the two best friends put their heads together and merged their two passions and created Prestotechnics.
We have always strived to do things better. We decided to hire staff that are all individually licensed so that they fully understand all the rules and safety precautions. We want our staff to improve themselves and we won’t prohibit them from learning all the “firework secrets”.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our journey started off slowly but we saw it as a blessing in disguise by allowing us ample time to learn the industry and give us a chance to perfect our quality. Another challenge, and what most people don’t realize, is that firework displays require local and state permits. With each local municipality having separate rules, procedures, and fees it took a bit to get up to speed. Additionally, for display fireworks an ATF license is required which brings a whole level of complexity and record keeping.
In the last two years, we’ve learned our groove and have really been able to grow the business and have been busier than ever.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PrestoTechnics, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
Prestotechnics specializes in event and city firework displays. We also offer special effects such as event lighting, snow machines, and sparkler fountains. We are probably most known for our wedding displays, as we do well over 100 a year. Our favorite part is the finale section. The last few years we have expanded into the city display market, bringing a level of creativity and quality that had been absent in many of those displays.
We are most proud of how we have been able to fulfill every client’s dream. We strive to go above and beyond our initial quote to really bring out the individuality of the event as well as providing a unique experience for every client.
What sets us apart from the other companies is that we really care about the client as a person, not just a contract, and we look at each event individually to design their vision. We also are set apart in the quality of our crew. Many companies don’t want the extra competition and will hire “seasonal” staff rather than fully trained individuals and don’t put in long term effort into training.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck always seems to be on our side. Things always seem to fall in place right as we need them to. Some say we are the luckiest of group of guys they know.
- Our lowest priced display starts at $1500 (additional permitting costs may apply).
