Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Jolliffe.
Roberto, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
So as every story goes, it starts with a problem. My problem occurred to me in back in 2018. I went to F8, Facebook Conference in San Jose California. With any conference, there is time to hang out after the daily sessions conclude. As anyone who is out of town on a work trip, you want naturally want to find things to get into, so I googled and searched all the event sites and could not find anything to do downtown San Jose especially after seven everything closes. I wandered around down town and happened to run into this DJ I was like a man what is there to do out here. He said man there is a restaurant called “Tac Oh” that turns into a club after 10 pm. I was like how would never know this if i was not from here or lived there for period of time. That sparked the idea! Is there a way to make someone who is not from a specific place they are visiting to feel as if they are a local. After many nights of writing out idea and working on the code with the current CTO Marshall Felder the idea of Evntures was born. But life happens so a year went by and I went on a trip to Thailand in October of 2019. While vacationing and relaxing I told my current CMO Roderick Burke the idea and vision I had for the app called Evntures and he loved it! So when we landed back state side he said man let’s go for it, so we decided to go half and bootstrap the business. The months following entailed long phone meetings working thru planning the vision , building the app, testing it, and going thru the ups and downs of not being fully knowledgeable on all aspects of the tech business. You definitely pay for what you don’t know, so we had to educate ourselves a lot and reach out to build a great network /mentors. We made it thru all that incorporated Evntures Inc. and launched Evntures app on Android & iOS on 2-20-20! We are only getting started can’t wait to see it grow, this app provides the local events that provide the hidden cultures of cities you are in, this is all built on community, by the community, for the community!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
You definitely pay for what you don’t know, so we had to educate ourselves a lot, and so we can save fund because there a lot of charges you don’t anticipate or look over because you are just unaware. I have learned that every person needs to understand what you want done and in full detail because all the details matter especially in an app it could be as minimal as you were supposed to add an exit button to a screen. Another big thing is that we are not in Tech city per say so we didn’t have a tech business network to relate to understanding what we’re doing that was incorrect or what we need to look out for. So we started going to more networking events at Geekdom and Launch SA, places that specifically focus on and work with tech startups. Always be aware you have to step outside your comfort zone, and it is ok to ask questions or ask for help!
Tell us more about the business.
Evntures is an app that sources events for you to find things to do. Not the regular things like LA Live, Hollywood, and like Venice. We will help you find things in a list or map view of local events in your neighborhood and city. You can also post your own events if you feel like you’re getting lost in the crowd elsewhere. I am just proud that three educated black men came together over an idea, built a legit business entity, and actually brought to life a real product that works well in a little over three months! What makes us different is in a day and age of constant communication we only allow current commenting, throw away the days of skewed ratings on events and places from 4-5 years ago, we let you know what’s going on right now today that’s what matters! We event look out for the event promoters and only allow comments by users in the actual vicinity of the event so you know those comments are relevant, and you could fix the problem on the spot. Our map view lets you look at the map and tap to see what events are at a glance, and then the list view provides another format for you to look and filter thru events easily.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is integral in many aspects of life. I feel like those moments are meant to be. For me, success seems to always come into play when I’m meeting the right ppl to put on my team. Like I was getting a tour of a tech facility, and I asked the guide, I’m looking for a UI/UX person to help me design, and he points while we were walking, and there she was. Lizzie she was part of a startup and had the experience i could use and learn from. Also going into the Y combinator forums where I reached out for mentorship and happened to come across a co-founder of Rackspace who invited me to talk. I have bad luck where I think I can depend or rely on an individual to get something done, but that wasn’t the case, but it just made me learn it myself. I think luck good or bad helps you become stronger in unknown ways.
