Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Porter.
Ruth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for photography was sparked in my early teens when my mom gave me her old Kodak camera. Photographing the many locations, I lived growing up helped me keep a printed timeline. My younger brother was usually my favorite subject. That is until I got my first national photography gig for Disney On Ice in my early 20’s. After three tours, I decided to take a break and get off the road to settle into “the real world” with a family. I picked it back up after the birth of my beautiful daughter. I love capturing the strength and beauty of women, from boudoir, birth, to family and events, all over the state of Texas.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me, making the switch from film to digital was challenging. I didn’t find many teaching resources at the time. I felt extremely slow at developing my craft. I am 16 years in, and I am glad I never gave up. If you practice anything long enough, you have no option but to get better at it.
Last year my family and I took a huge risk moving to Missouri to pursue a life dream. However, it didn’t work out the way we hoped. It made me feel like I failed miserably. I lost a friend and business partner, and we felt completely betrayed. In the end, though, it was still a risk we took and making the best of it. I am glad that what felt like a horrible situation landed us back in Granbury, Texas. We have been “home” for eight months, and it couldn’t have happened at a better time!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I started out photographing families and children in a studio setting for several years. Once I branched out on my own, I gained a love for being outdoors, chasing the sun. Ruth Porter Photography specializes in intimate portraits and luxury boudoir. I believe that every woman has a goddess inside of her that needs to be seen, if by no one else, at least herself. The right photographer can bring that out in anyone. I am a human sculptor, photographer, artist, counselor, and friend, depending on the day. I love building a close relationship with my clients, and I want them to feel comfortable coming to me with all their photography needs.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know if I would call it luck. I feel like luck takes a lot of hard work and determination. Good or bad, every experience has helped shape me into the person, entrepreneur, wife, mother, and photographer I am today. We don’t have control of everything that happens to us, but we have control over the way we respond to it. That response determines the next chapter and the journey keeps getting more exciting!
