Meet Sarah Ray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Ray.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up with love for photography and you could often find me exploring my backyard with an old point and shoot camera. It was my film photography class in high school that accelerated my passion and solidified my desire to pursue wedding photography as a career!

I enrolled in photography school with The University of the Nations in Kona, HI and the rest was history! After completing the program nearly a decade ago, I photographed my first wedding and haven’t stopped since. I’m passionate about creating light-filled and emotional images that tell a story and showcase the beauty of both the people in the photos and the world around them. Being invited to one of the most joyful days in a couple’s life is truly an honor!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Moving states (from VA to TX) was the biggest hurdle I’ve faced in business over the years. Thankfully Texas welcomed me with open arms. It’s been a privilege to grow and connect with other talented vendors in the wedding industry!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I believe that wedding photography is about making true connections and creating timeless family heirlooms that will be passed along for generations. Every love story deserves to be beautifully documented!

In a decade of photographing weddings, I’ve found that building a friendship with my couples is important. After all, they’re going to spend more time with me on their wedding day than anyone else! That’s why my process begins with a conversation. I want to hear everything—how they met, funny first date stories, how they got engaged, etc. When we build a solid connection from the beginning, my couples are much more at ease in front of the camera!

I also love being a resource beyond photography whether the couple is looking for engagement session outfit recommendations, timeline advice, or vendor referrals, I’m more than happy to share my tips!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I owe a big “thank you” to my photography school teachers who gave me the skills and confidence necessary to excel in this career. My husband, Matty, also deserves a shoutout for being my constant source of support and encouragement!
