Meet Sheila Walls of Get POSH Ministry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Walls.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheila. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I began GPM (Get POSH Ministry) at my kitchen table surrounded by six women who I felt would be intricate in assisting me to get my nonprofit off the ground. It was life changing for us all!

My passion for starting a nonprofit was birthed out of my own personal struggles of having a low self-image and low self-worth at a young age. As I grew older a group of women from a local nonprofit that was assisting me, always encouraged me to be the best at whatever I did and to always help those who were in the same position I was in. I never forgot them or that moment. Fast forward to 2013.

I found myself volunteering all over the Tarrant County area; pampering women with free salon services, doing haircuts for patients in hospice care and teaching empowerment workshops at local nonprofits. But that wasn’t enough. I wanted to be more, and I wanted to do more. So in late 2013, I submitted my application for a 501 (c)3 and Get Posh Ministry was born!

We started out extremely busy providing our core services but quickly had to scale back because we were slowly being led down a different path and our services weren’t being given to the ones who need them. I can happily say now that six years later we are providing our free salon services to the women and teen girls who need them.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! Other than the usual trials of raising funds, trying to maintain a good solid volunteer base has been difficult.

But one of our greatest challenges was finding an adequate facility to provide our services. It’s easy to offer free haircuts to young men and boys but when you provide salon services to women you need access to shampoo bowls, hair dryers, etc. It can be a little more daunting.

In the beginning, we would schedule our clients with a different stylist and have them go to their individual salons. But now, we have been blessed to partner with Novak Hair Studios. Novak Hair Studios is a beautiful, amazing 10,000 sq. foot, eco-friendly, zero waste salon located in downtown Fort Worth.

Our partnership with them has allowed us to service more women at one time as well as offer a space for the volunteers to all work under one roof on one day. It has been a huge benefit to our monthly events.

Get POSH Ministry, Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Get P.O.S.H Ministry Inc. (GPM Inc.) is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to empower and build self-esteem in women and teen girls. We provide totally free salon services, makeovers, empowering workshops, and motivational events. To the less fortunate. Our ultimate mission is to make these women feel beautiful both inside and out and to give them that extra boost of confidence that every woman needs before that big job interview or just in their everyday life!

Studies show that it’s difficult for women who are experiencing abuse and financial hardships to see themselves as beautiful. Her self-esteem is destroyed by the many obstacles and issues she’s facing. Statistics also show that just by receiving a simple makeover and a little pampering her confidence will soar! Our vision is to see every woman feel better, feel more empowered and ready to re-enter society as an invaluable part of it while achieving her dreams.

GPM is the only nonprofit organization that provides free salon services every month by a professional stylist in a professional environment. That’s what sets us apart from other organizations that typically only provide back to school cuts or prom makeovers. Although those services are much needed and welcomed, our goal is to be a monthly go-to for women in need.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Personally, success is when our phone rings to schedule another lady or teen for one of our services or to book our organization to teach an empowering workshop. When I see other women succeed and get their life back… I have succeeded in fulfilling our mission.
