Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Matlock.
Stephanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my accounting career at the age of 16, by getting involved in a co-op program at my high school, Plano West Senior High. At the time, I was a teen mother, and I worked hard to graduate at age 17. Now fast forward to 2011, a Criminal Justice Degree and two children later, I was married and recently laid off from an advertising agency after a merger, it was then I decided to go into business for myself.
I’m from a family of entrepreneurs, so it runs in my blood, I took additional training classes on taxes and bookkeeping. With a lot of hard work, here I am today, over 22 years of accounting experience and 12 years later with a thriving bookkeeping business. I love the work that I do! I enjoy helping business owners get to the bottom line of their business.
Has it been a smooth road?
I learned a long time ago you have to be patient enough to see your dreams and everything you’ve asked for the fall in the place, being self-employed isn’t for the faint of heart. You have to be able to manage your money, the mortgage, office rent and children activity dues along with having savings during the less busy times of the year are essential.
As I have matured so has my business, and one great thing that I learned is that every client isn’t the best client for you, you have to interview your customers just as much as they interview you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and lay down the ground rules for both parties this will ensure that everyone’s business is successful and will run smoother. I don’t think being an entrepreneur should be a struggle, but my firm has stretched and grown me into the person I am today.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Empower Bookkeeping Firm – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My passion is to serve! Empower Bookkeeping Firm is where We Educate. We Empower, and YOU Succeed! I take pride in that my business that has grown primarily by word of mouth over the 12 years in business. I have a lot of clients from the Lakewood area in Dallas.
What sets me apart from most bookkeeper’s is that I am a Certified QuickBooks Pro-Advisor, recognized by IRS and I participate in the Annual Filing Season Program. I was recently voted on of 19 Best Dallas Bookkeepers by Expertise.com. I love to incorporate new technology in my business wherever possible.
I take pleasure in helping businesses and individuals see the light when it comes to their finances. It’s awesome to witness the “ah-ha” moment, seeing the relief on my clients face when their mind is at ease by me walking them through billing, tracking and managing monthly expenses, and showing them which service or product is most profitable for their business, which in turn brings more profits for the company.
I show you how to set up and maintain an efficient bookkeeping system. I can create invoices for your clients, pay your monthly expenses, process your payroll, file your federal/state tax filings monthly and file quarterly reports.
I also have other services such as setting up LLCs, S-corporations along with tax preparation for the small business owner and individual. I maintain a broad range of clients virtually worldwide. I am passionately committed to the success of my clients.
One thing that makes me very recognizable is most time you won’t catch me without some cool looking white eyeglasses frames.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
As a passionate bookkeeper, I dislike when I see other bookkeepers in Dallas not living up to their full potential with their work, therefore diminishing the services that they give clients. This inspires me to serve my community by going the extra mile to ensure that they are provided with excellent customer service.
I like that I have created long-lasting partnerships with clients even if it’s a one-time thing they know they can call me anytime to assist with their bookkeeping needs.
As far as living here in Dallas in the metroplex, I love that you can always find something family oriented to do whether it’s Clyde Warren Park or a Museum there is always something cultural and fun.
Now the main thing that I don’t like about Dallas is the traffic on 635, there seems always to be a slowdown of some sort anytime of the day or night.
