Today we’d like to introduce you to Tashina Calhoun.
Tashina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Oh, my goodness where how did I get started? “Well, taking photographs was always a passion of mine. When I was younger I used to get my grandmother’s rugs and throw them over the doors and get to snapping away! Between photos and little childhood business ventures you could always find me mixing and mingling in efforts to collaborate to make some business happen. Fast forward to my college years; it just simply got to the point that others would rely on me having my camera with me to take photos.
Originally I was a business major I wanted to be some hot shot businesswoman, pencil skirt with my blazer and high heels but once I found out business stats and I were not on the same page I switched to an art major. You would have thought I had it figured out then, but I did not; I graduated college and starting doing something totally not related to my field. It wasn’t until Obama was getting inaugurated and I was watching TV and thinking that I needed to get back to doing what I was passionate about.
I had always done photography on and off but I knew I needed to get back into what I was passionate about. I always have believed in documenting memories because once the moment is gone we only have memories and documentation of what happened. For this very reason alone I wish everyone would not take photography and photographers for granted. There really is a craft it is not just a point and shoot type of process. I took classes to bring me up to date.
Then slowly began meeting more people in my field all the while implementing the things I had learned in class and from my mentorship. Having been blessed with clients was mostly word of mouth. I think it really comes down to who knows you and what you do! Present day, where am I?
Well, in present day I continue to improve and fine-tune my skill sets for my two businesses. If you are not learning you are not growing! With my photography clients, I am blessed with often times are through encounters or connections via a previous client which tells me I am doing something right! I pride myself on the experience that my clients experience with me.
I currently have Ada Lee Photography and though out my history with Ada Lee Photography and Career as an educator I also have an education consulting company that was recently launched both companies are based right out of the Dallas Fort Worth Area and are available upon destination!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m a laid back person, so I do my best to stay in a positive state always! The things that are “EASY” to do are also not easy to do. So while I have a team of people I work with the basic challenges of the business side of things can get a little bit daunting. You have to constantly push yourself, you have to be your biggest cheerleader, you have to be willing to endure, you have to have perseverance.
Online presence and upkeep can be time-consuming but it is a must. You have to sacrifice your time and sometimes you cannot do the things that you may want to do but you have to the things you GOT to do! It’s responsibility, most times it is the team no days off but it is what it is. I believe for any entrepreneur those things are always going to be a struggle but as long as you can delegate tasks efficiently and pray things seem to always come together.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would most definitely had a CMR in place from day one along with constant email marketing. I read more on everything because you simply find more when you go look for it! I am a visual person in learning and my learning style I am a very tactile learner. However the more you read you actually get to let it ponder and marinate before just diving right in so I would definitely read more!
