Meet Tracy Southers-Parker of WordPlay PR & Marketing in Grapevine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Southers-Parker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story begins with my love of writing. I majored in journalism during college, but did not want to be a “just the facts” news reporter. I realized that a concentration in public relations would allow me to write creatively and inspire people to action…which is what PR is all about. I spent the first 13 years of my career in corporate PR, holding positions in Dallas, Pittsburgh and Naples, Florida. Working in a variety of industries – telecommunications, real estate, hospitality and city government – taught me how-to communicate with different audiences and allowed me the opportunity to wear many hats. In addition to writing press releases and newsletters, I also penned copy for ads, brochures, direct mail, websites and executive speeches. Along the way, I earned my accreditation in public relations (APR) and learned the importance of research, strategy, integrated marketing campaigns and measuring results. In 2006, I transitioned to agency life, becoming a partner in WordPlay. I was ready to chart my own course and choose the clients I represented. I returned to Texas in 2008, opening the WordPlay office in Grapevine. After 24 years in the business, I’m able to offer my clients a depth of experience and services, but writing remains my greatest strength and the foundation for my success.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge during my 24 year career was starting my own PR agency in Grapevine in 2008. Although I was ready to take the leap, I was not certain I was cut out to be an entrepreneur…but, 9 years later, it turns out I am! In addition to being the PR professional, I also had to be the sales person, administrative assistant, accountant and HR manager. Fortunately, I found reliable contractors and vendors to help support and grow the business. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of outsourcing tasks and delegating projects to other team members. There continue to be ups and downs, but I’ve learned to enjoy the slow periods and wait for the next big wave to hit! Being a small business owner is not for the faint of heart, but it’s certainly been rewarding for me.

As president of WordPlay, I believe strongly in giving back and getting involved. I’ve served on the board of directors for area Chambers of Commerce and numerous committees for fundraising events, donating my time and marketing expertise. In addition, I became a certified woman-owned business (WBE) in 2015, which I consider to be a great accomplishment.
