Meet Trailblazer Cormeshia Batty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cormeshia Batty.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Writing, photography and the arts are all something that I’ve loved since grade school… but I decided to take the straight and narrow career path instead, so those passions weren’t nourished for quite some time. I attribute being a career college student to that decision still today. It wasn’t until the last two years of undergrad that I decided to major in Communications, and at that point, not only did I excel in my classes, I stopped dragging my feet and focused on completed my degree within the timeframe my advisor and I agreed upon. By the time, I attained my bachelors I’d been working in corporate for more than fifteen years, had been married for five and my first child was four years old.

Since then, I’ve had a second child and have made a concerted effort towards finding work (within the company) that falls in line with my degree – a transition that is extremely difficult when more than 85% of my experience is in finance. To help boost my resume, I decided to launch a blog. I launched my website in early 2017 and things have been moving forward since.

When I launched, I didn’t have much of a plan other than needing a platform to display my writing abilities. I love makeup and thought that if I could find twelve makeup artists to interview and capture working that I’d have enough content to post at lest one feature per month. I also began advertising myself as a freelance writer.

To date, things have been in forwarding motion. I’ve been successful at finding freelance jobs. I’ve been appointed as the Editor and official Brand Ambassador of DFW Black Bloggers, and my brand is growing. The decision to launch has been one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, absolutely not. The biggest struggle that I’ve overcome in this process has been getting over being extremely shy and introverted. Close second is not knowing my worth. My advice to women who are just starting their journey, no matter their age, is to know your worth and follow your heart, and instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, then it’s not right for you. I would also advise making time for rest and take time out for loved ones, it’s important. Lastly, don’t stop. Understand that rejection is a part of growth, it will help build character and allow you to figure out the boundaries you have to make for yourself in reference to your business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SheBatty – what should we know?
Good question! I consider myself a blogger/communications expert. I write, market and do photography, and I’m known for them all… I can put together quality marketing for an event, attend it, capture visual inspiration with my photography skills, and provide a captivating story. I’m most proud of becoming the editor of the DFW Black Bloggers community.

I would have to say that staying true to myself sets me apart from others. I’m a quality over quantity type person. I understand that what’s for me is for me, and that slow and steady can still win the race.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Being an Army brat definitely played a major part in setting me up for success. I was afforded the opportunity to travel during my childhood years, so learned how to respect cultural differences at an early age. It also helped me be open-minded and compassionate towards others.
