Meet Trailblazer Kelley Barnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Barnes.

Kelley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a creator; I’m a connoisseur; I’m an enthusiast. My appreciation for the art of both Fashion and Style is unprecedented, unwavering, and unending — that’s why I founded The Style Barn. My blog is a direct representation of who I am, in terms of style. It’s been six years of no gimmicks; no rules, just adulterated love for evolving, creating, and fun!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Had it not been for my mentor, I probably would’ve never founded The Style Barn. When I began blogging, there was a list of bloggers I followed like Leandra Medine, Necole Kane (better known as Necole Bitchie), and Danielle Bernstein. Now, if you’re familiar with any of the aforementioned, you’d know that these were tough acts to follow. I was intimidated. Their sites contained a plethora of ads; they had access to people, places, and things that I could only dream of having access to.

During a call with my mentor, I admittedly expressed my reservations about starting my own blog. Her response? “Kelley, just do it” in her blunt, New York accent. And… I did.

Was it easy? Absolutely not. There was so much trial and error with learning the logistics of WordPress, social media, branding, networking, etc. Taking the initiative to ‘just do it’ was how I’ve gotten this far.

One thing I can say is that although I was building a brand, the brand actually built me. Since establishing my blog in 2012, I’ve learned so much about myself, people, business, and life.

My advice to anyone wanting to start a blog, business or anything else — just do it! Be passionate about what you do. Be fearless; be intentional; be you!

We’d love to hear more about The Style Barn.
Aside from blogging, I’m currently employed via Hilton Worldwide as a Web Content Editor, on the Hilton Honors side of things. I’m also a Copywriter and Content Planner for CopyCreate, an LLC I founded last summer.

The Style Barn is fresh; it’s clean, and it’s original. I march to the beat of my own drum. I don’t concern myself with what everyone else is doing. Creating is fun and inspiring, and that’s what I’m all about.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women are well positioned for anything, especially leadership. Women are making strides in male-dominated industries, like never before. Women are defying the odds in every way possible. We can do it all.
