Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Grundler.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been an artist for the majority of my life, my early memories are of drawing and doodling on the kitchen floor. Art was always there until it wasn’t. See this blog post https://www.teacher2teacher.education/author/lgrundler/. In 2014 I found my way back to myself and my art life through a career change and my art journals. Now, I create and post my art and donate it occasionally. Additionally, my husband and I advocate for arts education on social media, support educators across the globe with #K12ArtChat a weekly twitter chat and visit with amazing educators about creativity on our podcast, The Creatively Connected Classroom.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
You know that scene in the movie, Parenthood when Steve Martin is “riding” a rollercoaster that is real life. The grandmother says, “you know when I was 19 grandpa took me on a rollercoaster I always wanted to go again. You know, it was just so interesting to me that a ride could make me so frightened, so scared, so sick, so excited, and so thrilled all together! Some didn’t like it. They went on the merry-go-round. That just goes around. Nothing. I like the roller coaster. You get more out of it.” Life is a rollercoaster and if it wasn’t it would be boring. We both work full time as educators and have three active kids. There’s never downtime or a dull moment. We have to make time for creativity and our passion for supporting educators it’s not easy but we have built an art family that supports us.
GrundlerArt – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our business is art and education. We consult, advocate, share and support educators to bring more creativity into their classrooms through #K12ArtChat and our podcast The Creatively Connected Classroom. Additionally, I create and share my visual/art journals and my wild mixed media expressionist works or art.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is about love, family, friendship and making a difference. All artists have dreams of selling their art and feeling the success of being in a gallery, being represented, making money but for me, it’s always been about making art available to kids. Kids deserve experiences that introduce them to creative expression that allows them a space to share their voice and make artistic choices. I also find my success in the act of making art, after a long period of not making art, I find that every day I am making art is a success.
