Meet Ray Lucas of Mane And Groom Barber & Beauty Salon in Cedar Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Lucas.

Ray, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised on the south side of Chicago. I began cutting hair at the age of sixteen. I was always an artsy kind of kid growing up and a fresh haircut was like art to me. It started as just wanting to keep a fresh cut for myself and then I began cutting a few of my friends from the neighborhood. I’ve been able to sustain a career in barbering for over 25 years primarily through the grace and mercy of Christ, and a lot of studying and learning of the Barber industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Throughout my tenure in the barber industry, I faced many challenges. From being kicked out of barber college, taking a break from practicing the craft and a host of other things. Upon returning to barbering, I operated in shops for many years without having a license. This had to be one of the most backward things I could’ve done because I had no leverage when it came down to booth rent or percentages. Not to mention the fact that my aunt paid out of her own pocket for me to attend barber college. It was a real disappointment and I felt like a failure. Though I would eventually get on the right track, looking back, I often think about how much time was wasted. But hey, you love and you learn, right?

Mane And Groom Barber & Beauty Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our business is a husband and wife operated barber and beauty salon. We’re a “Precision Cut Concept” salon that specializes in men and women’s grooming and styling. We pride ourselves on providing a comfortable atmosphere whereas getting your hair cut or styled is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many barbershops and beauty salon in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Aside from the professionalism, consistency and continued elevation of our business, it’s the love our guest feel at Mane and Groom Barber & Beauty Salon that separates us from the rest.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as having a piece of mind. With social media, tv, and music all trying to sell us on what success should look like, we often get caught up in the hype. People are more stressed and depressed trying to live up to this false idea of what success is. I’m working on creating a legacy for generations to come. That would be the ultimate meaning of success for me.
