Meet Carrie Song of Carrie Song Art in Preston Hollow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Song.

Carrie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Art is something that has followed me my entire life, I actually still have sketchbooks from grade school. As a mother of three young children, it has resonated to me that something they learn now, can shape the rest of their lives. The spark of the love for art carried me through high school and into college. I studied fashion merchandising in college, worked for one of the largest watch companies in the world and spent a decade designing jewelry and accessories. Working in jewelry and textiles, I was able to create and explore with rich materials and color.

I spent some time away from work to raise three wonderful children. Once they were all in school, I gravitated towards painting again. I started doing works for friends and sharing some of my work through social media for fun. As luck would have it, through a wonderful network of friends, interest turned into requests. At the early onset, I was able to work with several interior designers who were compelled by what they saw. I was enlisted to produce art for a few buildings and that became enough to get my business running. Three years later, I’ve been able to grow a business organically and continue doing what I truly love.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t know if I would necessarily say *smooth*, but I live by a mantra that I read one time, which is that “Nothing great ever came out of being comfortable.” There is certainly the balance of home and work life. And without a traditional set of business hours, it makes things easier and more complex at the same time. When you are with family, you can stress out of not spending more time working and more so vice versa. There is a business component as well, struggles of how to best grow your business, where to spend time and money. And finally, there is the artistic side as well. I spend a lot of time doing commissioned pieces, which is wonderful because you get to create something from feedback and create something for a specific purpose. But I’ve also had to turn away some work because the project wasn’t right for either myself or my client. My hope also is to constantly evolve and grow as an artist. Challenging myself to new aesthetics and mediums are a productive struggle that I face and hopefully always will.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Carrie Song art – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am an artist, focusing primarily on abstract expressionist paintings utilizing acrylics and mixed media. I create original paintings, I work on commissioned projects and work in printmaking as well. I would say that what I am most known for would be large format pieces and then my Home Collection and Drippy Hearts series. I am most proud that I have been able to maintain a business born completely out of a passion and love of art. It is truly a blessing that this is my “work.” Since the pieces are uniquely created, I think there is an aesthetic signature to my work, that I hope is recognizable.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans are to continue to evolve as an artist. Continue to seek new inspirations and hopefully meet amazing clients along the way. I recently launched a new website, so constantly tinkering with that is in my short-term future. I will be exhibiting in various markets in the coming months; it’s really an exciting time to be an entrepreneur right now.
