Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Maungu.
Grace, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Like most people in 2011, I lost my banking job. Jobs were scarce, so I had to get minor jobs on craigslist to survive. I got hired to help out at a body wrap shop. Within a few weeks, I had learned how to run the business. The owner fell on hard times, and I was informed my hours would be reduced. I had grown to love the job, so I took a leap of faith to start my own.
With the knowledge I had along with YouTube, Craigslist and Google, Neemas body wraps was up and running on the 28th of Dec 2011. I did ok, but I needed to offer more services to attract more clients. In 2013, I enrolled in Tint school of Cosmetology to study aesthetics. Now I offer about ten services, and I see an average of ten clients a day.
Has it been a smooth road?
I struggled with time management at first. Square solved this problem because I can access my schedule from anywhere via my phone. I also tried to run everything single-handedly which cost me more in the long run. Now, I pay a professional to update my website, Google.com listing, and Yelp as well. To anyone looking to start a business use an experienced broker to find your location. They are better at negotiating the lease, and most of them are free.
Lastly, the customer is always right but never let them tell you how to run your business. Be kind but firm when addressing an issue.

I started by doing body wraps which are the only service I offered for a few years. Please refer to my website for the description. I now offer facials, chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, dermaplanning, microblading, waxing, sugaring, ionic foot detox, and infrared sauna. I am most proud of my reviews on Google, Yelp, Groupon and square. There is nothing better than clients loving what I do. I think my knowledge of the services makes me stand out from others. I am also fast, efficient and reasonably priced.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
We had dairy cows growing up, and we had to take care of them sometimes when a worker was not available. We had to feed them, clean the pen and even sell milk from door to door. My mother did not discriminate. We also had to do all household chores. Going to an all girls boarding school for elementary and high school education made me an independent woman. I think this two factors played a big role in shaping my character.
