Meet Nancy Addison of Organic Healthy Life in Oak Lawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Addison.

Nancy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Before becoming a professional speaker, a health and nutrition counselor, and chef, I experienced some serious health problems.

At the age of two, I was given an overdose of penicillin that demanded numerous blood transfusions and bone marrow tests, leaving me with acute anemia. Craving sugar for the energy it provided, I became pre-diabetic by high school and developed macular degeneration so serious, that the eye doctor told my mother that I was going blind.

By my late twenties, I was still struggling with acute anemia, pre-diabetes, and macular degeneration. In addition to this, I had painful acid reflux and carpal tunnel syndrome. I had also lost many of my family members to heart disease.

When I was pregnant, I gained 50 extra unhealthful pounds. Soon after my second child was delivered, my own personal doctor died of cancer. This startled me.

When my father died of cancer, (my second child was only a year old), this was a turning point for me. My father and I had been taking all the drugs prescribed to us and doing everything we were told to do, but we didn’t seem to be getting well. In fact, he had been surprised with a diagnosis of four months to live, which was almost to the day. I realized right then that what we were all doing didn’t seem to be working.

I decided I would start on a different health plan, by using food as my medicine. I found a new doctor and I told her my plan. She told me she had not learned anything about nutrition in medical school, but she would try to be supportive of my holistic health plan.

One night, I was reading an article in LIFE magazine about the newest type of corporate farming. It described the conditions animals were kept in and how they were treated as if they were not living creatures with needs and feelings.

I read how they were given drugs and chemicals to make them grow fatter faster. Antibiotics were used to keep them alive because the conditions in which they were being raised were so horrific that any living creature could not survive otherwise.

Being an animal lover, I was absolutely horrified. I put the magazine down, turned to my husband, and said, “I can never be a part of this again.” At that moment, I became a vegetarian and decided to raise my children that way.

I decided I would raise my children as healthy as I possibly could. I began to research health, nutrition, and self-healing. I embarked on a long course of study into many different healing concepts, including ancient Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda Medicine, Macrobiotics, Mediterranean Cuisine, as well as natural hygiene, raw foods, detoxification, and supplement therapy. I incorporated the most beneficial components of each concept into my own system of health and healing.

I began making my own baby food, growing an organic garden, and switching out ingredients in my recipes for healthier versions I was learning about. I started adjusting my stressful lifestyle and food choices. Over the first year, I lost all of my excess weight without even trying, my acute anemia disappeared, my pre-diabetes went away, my carpal tunnel syndrome healed, and my acid reflux went away almost overnight. My new doctor was amazed and so was I!

My pediatrician told me one day that I had the healthiest children he had ever seen. By simply changing our diet and lifestyle, I knew I was on the right path.

My success inspired me to share my information with others. I now commit my practice to educate clients and audiences about the effects of eating a more nutritious plant-based diet. I also teach them about the toxins found in our daily environment, the benefits of eating a higher quality of food, and how they can achieve a more energetic, optimum lifestyle. I specialize in helping people get healthier, but I am especially sought after for my protocols reversing diabetes, heart disease and cancer, using diet and lifestyle.

I am enthusiastic about helping others achieve a vibrant, sustainable, healthy way of living. I cut through the myths and misinformation about health and nutrition. I provide straight and honest truth with easy strategies to take control of your health and reverse disease.

Because I wanted to share my information with others, I decided to write about my health research over the past 30 years. I authored “How To Be A Healthy Vegetarian,” which is in its second edition. (It has received 6 book awards, including winner for Best Health And Wellness Book of the Year, 2018, San Francisco, Green Book Festival Awards; Winner for Best Diet And Nutrition Book of the Year, 2017, by the Beverly Hills Book Awards; and Winner for Best Specialty Cookbook of the Year, 2017, by the Book Excellence Awards).

I wrote, “Diabetes And Your Diet” (Awarded Winner for Best Health Book of the Year, International Book Awards 2017).

I also wrote “ Raising Healthy Children,” about raising my children. (Awarded the Winner of the Mom’s Choice Award For Excellence, and Two-Time Winner of the “Best Parenting Book” of the Year and the “Best Family Book” of the Year in the International Book Awards, 2017).

My other books are, “Lose Weight, Get Healthy And Never Have To Be On A Diet Again!” and “Tube Feeding Recipe For Optimum Health.” I was the co-author of “Alive and Cooking; An Easy Guide To Health For You And Your Parents” with Maryann De Leo.

My clients use these books as their health and nutrition guides as well as a cookbook for their new eating plans. I truly believe that when we give our body the right tools, it can do miraculous things.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Along the way, there have been some challenges.

I have learned that people have to want to make changes in their diet or lifestyle. You cannot force someone to make better food and lifestyle choices.

Many of my clients are struggling with life-threatening illnesses. Sometimes my clients decide to do other things than what I suggest and I have to allow for the free will of my clients to make those choices.
I can provide a new diet and lifestyle plan, but it’s up to them as to whether they want to do it or not.

Please tell us about Organic Healthy Life.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I learned and grew in knowledge over time. We don’t know things until we know them. I try not to worry about the past, I stay present, and I learn something new every day.
