Today we’d like to introduce you to Janitha Lawson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Janitha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At the age of three, my hair began to fall out in patches from my head. As time progressed, I eventually lost all my hair and began my journey of being bald. My parents were told it was Alopecia and they were informed of as much information about the condition and the treatments available to me. I can remember I did try to wear wigs to cover the baldness but they were so uncomfortable and I felt that I was hiding who I truly was that I didn’t even last the full day with the wig on. So, I took on the all the scrutiny that came with being a little bald girl. It was extremely hard to make friends in elementary and due to not understanding what was wrong with me I lashed out and got in trouble a lot as a young child. My daily goal was to be treated the same as everyone else and to be accepted. I was stubborn enough to believe that being without hair would not limit my abilities nor would it keep me from participating in things that I wanted to do. As I grow older, I grew to accept my look and also found acceptance through friends. I try to always create an atmosphere that those around me feel comfortable asking about my Alopecia, so that people don’t label me due to their ignorance. Here recently I have become an advocate for those with Alopecia through sharing and living my story and also with the launch of my business called Glorious Crowns.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it was smooth at all. I was constantly talked about and picked on for bring bald. It was hard not having someone to relate to growing up cause no one looked liked me. So, at times, the road was lonely because I always felt as if no one could relate to how I felt or what I was going through.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glorious Crowns – what should we know?
My business company Glorious Crowns is company that was created for all bald women and children no matter the reason for hair loss. I strongly believe we need more representation of strong confident and bold bald women. From I have seen, losing your hair can be a very traumatic experience and could place limits on you and causes self esteem issues. With my company and apparel I seek to build up confidence in our uniqueness while also redefining what beauty is.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I give most credit and honor to God. None of this would have been possible with him. I have no prior knowledge of owning a business and doubted myself many times along the way. But God was with me the whole time and gave me the strength and grace to launch my site and to step out of my comfort zone. He has shown that this is not about me but that it is so much bigger then me!
