Meet Shauna Benoit of K & S Photography in Oak Lawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauna Benoit.

Shauna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was always that kid who carried my 110 Film camera around and tried to take interesting photos, well for a 10-year-old. I then had boxes that I would file my prints away in and separated them into different subject matters. My freshman year of college is when I really started getting serious about photography and spent every waking minute in the darkroom. I even joined a local paper and did a lot of their photojournalism. I think that is what helped sparked my interest is focusing on moments and getting artistic candid images. I graduated in 2004 from Texas Woman’s University with my BFA in photography. A couple of years later, I fell into photographing weddings when a lot of people I knew and friends of friends started getting married. I have been full time since 2009 and it has been the most fulfilling career. I just love making people smile and seeing happy people.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To be honest and frank, owning a business and being an artist is a struggle every day. There is the constant artist struggle of “I rock” to “I suck” and that is the same day. It really is a balancing act to be the creative photographer, but then also the marketer and customer service liaison and to deal with the financial business side and be the editor of all the images. It keeps one really busy and I have to remember that a work/life balance is important to keep me sane. I have a really supportive husband who is my rock and keeps me grounded.

K & S Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our main focus is candid (also known as documentary) wedding photography. The moments are what drive us as we want the memories to come flooding back to our couples when they look through their wedding images. I think I take candid images in a really unique and creative way and show couples a unique prospective on their wedding day. I also use lighting in a really unique and interesting way. Most portraits are done with natural light but I utilize light to create shadows and interesting feel to images. I also really focus on creating interesting compositions and spend a lot of time adhering to creating layers and depth to my images.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I’m really simple, success is making my clients happy.
