Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Jones and Christopher Duncan.
Elizabeth and Christopher, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our journey began as a landscaping company or as we like to refer to it “art”scaping. Although we still do “art”scaping in our area our main focus has become functional art. Some of the pieces we have created include a large windchime, working water features, and unique firepits. We prefer to upcycle old materials whenever possible. We are in the process of building a gallery/boutique in which we can display our artwork. Although created to display our artwork the building itself is a piece of art. The building is designed to resemble an old western town with a splash of steampunk thrown in and a large amount of industrial influence. We are hoping this building will provide not only a place for us to display our work but a place where others can come, get inspired and create their own ideas.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been smooth, but “nothing worthwhile comes easy!” I think our biggest struggle along the way has been finding the time to do all that we want to do and that we know we can do. We have so many projects going all the time that sometimes things get pushed aside. For instance, we had timelines in which we wanted to have the building complete, but that timeline has been pushed back several times because of other projects. We believe in taking care of our customers so we have had to put their projects ahead of our own. Although the journey isn’t always easy we are doing what we love to do and there is no end to the things we can imagine and create.
LizzyGator Custom Creations – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What LizzyGator does is a very complicated question. Basically, if you can imagine it LizzyGator can create it. We have done some beautiful “art”scaping throughout our area, most of which is geared towards Xeriscaping, meaning that much of our landscaping isn’t only beautiful but also very drought resistant and environmentally friendly. Much of our artscaping includes amazing art pieces that we have created using a variety of techniques. Christopher, who comes from a background in electrical work, enjoys creating kinetic art pieces, such as the very large windchime we recently created by upcycling an old windmill. Chris left no detail to chance, he researched every aspect of the chimes to be sure that they created a melodic tune when the wind blew them. This piece is large enough that the tune can be heard throughout the neighborhood. Elizabeth, whose journey began in Italian plaster, Venetian plaster, and desert landscaping, enjoys the detailing of every work of art. The windchime was worked and welded by Chris but Elizabeth designed the beauty in it, from the metal cut into flowers to the cacti planted at the top. We both have a unique set of talents and abilities and when we combine our efforts, there isn’t much we can’t create. I believe what sets us apart is our ability to create some many beautiful things by using materials most people would throw away. We love to upcycle old materials. We are able to see beauty in things people call trash. We also use a variety of materials and combinations of materials, such as marrying metal and wood to create art. I think we are also unique in the sense that we can create art with varying techniques. We have built funky doghouses from wood, magnificent signs by cutting and welding metal, and beautiful firepits through a variety and combination of techniques.
