Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Camille Alejandro.
Luisa Camille Alejandro was born in Alicia Isabela, the Philippines in 1995. Several years later, Luisa’s parents brought her and her older siblings to the United States in efforts to search for better opportunities. After traveling from California, the Alejandro family was able to call Arlington, Texas their new home.
As a teen in middle school, Luisa found a passion for graffiti and drawing. She enjoyed creating her own letter structures and playing with typography. She drew the names of her classmates for practice and even made a little money while doing that. She was also involved in the graffiti community through the use of social media, which at the time was YouTube and MySpace. Being a graffiti artist helped her learn the basic elements of design like line, color, shape, and space. Her love for graffiti was the beginning of her art journey as she continued her exploration of art throughout high school.
When she entered college in 2013, Luisa first majored in psychology and changed her major several times after that. In 2016, Luisa took a step forward into the art world and decided to study painting with the Art and Art History Department at the University of Texas at Arlington. She studied under her painting professors, Carlos Donjuan, Marylin Jolly, Sedrick Huckaby, Spencer Evans, and Benjamin Terry. They taught her how to make art conceptually while using her knowledge of the elements of design and the principles of art. With the help and support from her mentors, classmates, and friends, she has truly grown as an artist in these past several years. After getting an opportunity to paint a commercial mural in Arlington, she fell in love with the expansion of surface area for painting. This December, Luisa will graduate with a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting and a minor in Psychology. She aspires to become a mural artist that travels the world as well as a studio artist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Fortunately, I have been blessed with an awesome support system that made it a little easier to be able to go to school. With the help of my parents (and several student loans), I was able to further my education and study what I love. Along the road, it has been a struggle as far as juggling my health, family, work, and having a social life all while going to school and spending hours on end in the painting studio. I had to figure out a perfect balance for all areas of life and that was definitely one of my greatest struggles. Another struggle that any college student could experience was being financially stable. There have been times where I lived off of peanut butter jelly sandwiches, ramen noodles, and eggs with rice! I also struggled with being/feeling alone since my family moved out to different states, but thankfully, my four-legged companions made it a lot more manageable.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an artist and I specialize in painting and drawing. I am known for painting murals and doing commission work for clients. As a business, I am most proud of how my clients respond to what I have created for them and how much they appreciate my talent. What sets me apart from others is my genuine desire to always do my best in every piece of work that I do in order to satisfy my client.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Some people think being successful means having a ton of money but for me, it’s so much more than a monetary value. Success is when someone is fulfilling genuine happiness through their passion. When someone can do what they love and create a happy life for themselves, I would consider them successful and essentially serving their purpose in life.
