Meet Dr. Kendra Mayes of Kingdom Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kendra Mayes.

Dr. Kendra , let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was motivated after going to the doctor and receiving the news that I had gained 40 pounds, that my blood pressure was elevated to a dangerous level and that medicine would be necessary to regulate it. I was terrified. The doctor asked me one question, “What’s got you STRESSED.” At the time, I was working demanding hours in corporate America, pursuing a doctoral degree, and heavily engaged in ministry. I had seemly allowed my fitness regime to diminish over four years while I was in school. The conversation with my physician reignited my fire to WORKOUT and monitor my food intake. I started the metamorphosis process that day!

I was no stranger to fitness and the principals of healthy living, I simply refocused and went back to the basics! I did not want to be on blood pressure medication forever, so improving my quality of life through maintaining a healthy diet and getting reacquainted with my fitness regimen was no longer an option. Not to mention graduating with my doctoral degree, I wanted to be in the best shape of my life!

Those baseline goals lead to the motivation and determination to maintain my total lifestyle change. I was introduced to Zumba fitness and encouraged to become an instructor. I fell in love with the movement, music, and energy that the format encouraged, and used it as a platform to increase my knowledge about fitness programs that would help not only myself but the community in which I serve to become active, motivated, and engaged in physical fitness without becoming bored.

This quest lead to the birth of Kingdom Fitness, INC. in 2014 and several additional fitness format certifications including Zumba toning, RIPPed strength and endurance training, and then becoming a personal training. An additional component that enriched both my personal journey and client experience was nutrition because it is the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle change. And since you cannot outwork a bad diet. I invested time in becoming a specialist in fitness nutrition because ultimately, to achieve the desired results, you must master your food and understand how to develop healthy sustainable habits.

Educating and arming myself with the proper health and wellness knowledge and learning about the plethora of activities and foods, that could be incorporated to help reach my goals along with inspiring others has made the journey fun, exciting, and challenging. Therefore, Kingdom fitness, INC. is a full-service health and wellness organization that offers clients customized fitness and nutrition plans to aid them in meeting their health and wellness goals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey of health and wellness has been smooth because I am determined to succeed. I have been fortunate enough to have a great support team. And every platform that I interact with has a health and wellness component which acts as a form of accountability and encouragement. I also have a weighty responsibility to be a living example for my clients so those interactions aid in reinforcing healthy practices within my own life.

I also implement the basic yet important principle of time management, because it’s easy to get involved in the business of helping others and if you are not careful you will resume old habits that lead to unsuccessfully patterns in your life. So, the keys to staying on track and minimizing the struggle for me is time management, organization, and personal discipline. For example, I still block out meal my personal meal prep times, workout times, and goal setting times. Through these practices, I have maintained my journey while meeting the demands of multiple professional endeavors.

Kingdom Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Kingdom Fitness is a faith-based organization designed to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Our motto is “A Fit Life is a long life” which is based on the biblical principle found in 3rd John 1:2. The sole purpose of the program is to reduce the obesity rate among youth and adults through a curriculum that includes customized physical fitness plans, nutrition coaching, educational consultation, online coaching, and full serve meal prep. Kingdom fitness is heavily stitched into the DFW Metroplex by way of promoting fitness via Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

I have championed the cause of health and wellness within the local community in which I serve by way of hosting motivational workshops such as Eat-Pray- and Slay to educate the community. I’ve launched the Kingdom Kurves Cardio-Sculpt-And Tone workout DVD so that those striving to begin their fitness journey could have the convenience of workout at home. All these accomplishments really excite me because it keeps the Kingdom Fitness brand alive and well in the community in which I serve.

What sets Kingdom Fitness apart from other organizations is being apart of the Blue Zone Fort Worth health and wellness initiative. I serve as a Blue-Zones ambassador for the Fort Worth Blue Zone project which was initiated by Mayor Betsy Price and other community leaders. Kingdom Fitness has been featured on local Fort Worth billboards and bus benches throughout the city of Fort Worth community. In 2017, Dr. Kendra Mayes and Kingdom Fitness were also featured in the 360-west magazine for the move naturally campaign.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’ve had several proud moments in my fitness career. First, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of helping so many women transform their body and minds over the last 4 years. Watching my clients and fitness students increase in confidence, endurance, and athleticism makes me proud daily.

Additionally, I enjoy hearing the testimonies of how the practical faith-based approach that kingdom fitness uses has influence people of all different races, creeds, and colors to live life in a healthier way. As of 2017, under the coaching of Kingdom Fitness, I’d help dedicated clients lose over 1,000 pounds collectively!

Another proud moment in my career is taking the challenge to enter into my 1st bodybuilding competition in 2017 which was a phenomenal experience. I did not place in that competition, instead, I used it as a personal educational experience because I was new to the art of bodybuilding and competing. In the summer of 2018, I entered my 2nd competition where I placed 4th in the figure division. I was ecstatic about this personal level of success. Committing to these shows are a great way to further challenge myself and to represent to my community a higher level of discipline and commitment to the cause of health and wellness.
