Meet Buffie Dixon of Buffie The Hairslayer in Grapevine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Buffie Dixon.

Buffie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was just six years old, I fell in love with the art of hair. I started playing with barbies by giving them fun and cute hairstyles and later on practicing on friends and family. I realized in my early teens that hair was my passion.

I used to sit at the salon where my older sister worked as a hairstylist, and I would just watch how the clients came in and when they left it was like their whole mood was different. They would glow. I knew then that I had to be the one to give my clients that same feeling.

I have been a licensed professional for almost a year, but I have over ten years of experience in the hair industry. Originally born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, now 28 years old, residing in Grapevine, Texas. Over the years, I have learned to use my talents and creativity to make others aware of their true beauty.

I always say, “You can do anything you put your mind to.” That is exactly what I have done in the hair industry. I have become a mentor, helped with hair shows, hosted events, and I have also been featured in the Raw Artists Ovation Showcase Dallas.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I tell you that it wasn’t easy, it really was not easy. As a single mother of two daughters, I had to juggle working a full-time job, cosmetology school, raising my to daughters, and find time to build my clientele. I would be gone from my girls over 15 hours, I would be so stressed from work, exhausted from school, and I was barely remembering to eat.

I felt my body began to shut down. I felt anxiety overcoming me. I prayed, and I said. “Lord, if this is my true calling in life then you will make a way.”

The very next Monday, I woke up with the thought of quitting my job. There was a lady at work, and she said to me, “I don’t know you that well, but I know that you have a calling, you need to go and do that for yourself. These jobs don’t care about you, they will replace you with someone quick. God has got your back.” The very same day my close and dear friend had heard a scripture on the radio and said God told me to tell you something. She asked me has God not carried you this far? He will continue to make a way. That was my last day at that job.

I began to spend more time at school and doing more client’s hair. Referrals for hair appointments started coming for frequently.

Then it happened I had no babysitter for my girls. My babysitter had a family emergency to where she had to move back home. With only six weeks left of school, I was preparing to withdraw. All I could do was cry. After missing three days of school, my girl’s godmother told me her schedule at work had changed. My sister would keep them for a couple hours and then take them to her when she got off of work. Even though I would have to go to school until 9:30 pm, drive clear across town, and back across town to get home at close to 11 pm, I was happy.

I finally graduated. I took the test and became licensed.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I offer a wide variety of services to cater to your hair needs. My specialties include hair color, braids, cuts, natural hair, weaves/extensions, and custom wig units. My most popular services are Life is Better in Color, Braids, and Haircuts.

I also offer other services such as relaxers, dread maintenance, and various treatments for growing, moisturizing, and strengthening of the hair. I create unique, intimate experiences for my clients. You will not only leave feeling good about how you look, but your confidence will shine.

I am proud of the fact my client’s trust me. They feel as though their hair needs me, for that I am grateful. Healthy hair is my number one priority. My client transformations never cease to amaze me. When we compare their before and after pics or see their hair growth from the year before, it just makes my heart smile.

What were you like growing up?
I was always told I was too grown for my age, so I would say I was mature. I loved reading.

My friends in school would say I was a “nerd” because I was always into my academics. I loved making good grade, stayed on the honor roll, I won student of the year twice and my tech school, perfect attendance, and in gifted programs.

I love to make others laugh with my silly sense of humor. I always say, “Laughter is good for the soul.”

I’ve been in love with everything about the fashion and beauty industries. I would make collages from magazine cutouts often dreaming of being a famous hair stylist. I used to watch America’s Next Top Model, the style network, dress up my barbies, and I would try new hairstyles on anyone who would let me.
