Meet Kacy Kossum of KacyBakes in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kacy Kossum.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kacy. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
It started with a ladybug cake for my daughter’s birthday. I wanted to do it myself, so I baked it in a colander lined with aluminum foil because I didn’t have a shaped pan! Each year, I would design and bake a cake for her birthday. When our second daughter was on her way, I left my full-time job in Houston and started baking from home. I would study how-to videos online and spend hours working on a skill. My mother received a book in the mail by mistake on artisan breads and baking. She gave it to me, and I added breads and cinnamon rolls to my products.

When my husband took a job in Maryland, I discovered just how generous Texas’ Cottage Food Laws were. Maryland didn’t allow the sale of baked goods from home. But it turned out to be a wonderful opportunity. I emailed the owner of a local bakery and got a part-time job as a decorator at Cake Art in Salisbury, MD. The owner Susan Patt was a trained pastry chef, and I was able to learn so much from her about professional baking and decorating. We left Maryland in the summer of 2017 and relocated to Wylie.

I immediately restarted KacyBakes. Though I work a full-time job, I have a steady stream of baking orders. I love creating something fun or beautiful and enjoy the challenge. Every order is unique, so each requires some new technique or skill.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Drawing attention to my business is always a challenge. Social media has definitely been a big help with that, but most of my business is still word-of-mouth. Additionally, this is creative work, so there’s a bit of myself in everything I do. It can be intimidating to put myself out there and risk someone not liking my work. Also, as a home-based business rather than a storefront, there are limits to the size and number of orders that I can take, and although I have lower overhead costs, I don’t get the benefits of bulk ordering that would be available to a commercial bakery, so I’m always evaluating my expenses and pricing.

Please tell us about KacyBakes.
KacyBakes is a home-based baking company. I bake and decorate custom cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. During the holidays, I also offer homemade cinnamon rolls. As a smaller scale business, I’m able to offer personalized service to my clients. I also have professional experience in a bakery, which I feel sets me apart from other home bakers, particularly when handling orders for weddings and other large events.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My father was in the Air Force, so we moved several times while I was growing up. We were stationed in New Mexico for about three years and went camping as a family around Bonito Lake. It was nothing fancy, but I remember sharing meals outdoors with my family and just spending that time together.
