Meet Brittany Clark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Clark.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
For most of my life, my dream was to go to medical school and eventually become a surgeon. After spending my first two years of college working towards an undergrad in Biomedical Sciences, I realized that medical school was not my dream anymore. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in event planning because I thought I wanted to design and coordinate weddings. It wasn’t until I began searching for my own wedding photographer that I became interested in photography. I saw these incredible photos and realized I wanted to create that for people.

I spent months daydreaming about being a wedding photographer. The only thing stopping me was the thought that people would think I was crazy for doing something I had zero experience in – I mean I didn’t even know how to use a camera! I started to share my dream with my husband, and soon after, he surprised me with my very own camera. I spent so much time on the internet researching and teaching myself everything I know about photography. I built up my portfolio slowly by taking family and senior photos. I already had a small amount of wedding experience when my cousin got engaged, so since I was an aspiring wedding photographer, she let me shoot her wedding. I fell in love with capturing weddings and the rest is history.

Please tell us about your art.
From the moment, I became interested in photography, I knew there was a certain look I wanted my images to have. There was something so special about the images of the photographers I admired: the colors, the texture, the softness… I discovered that these photos were captured using medium-format film. I decided I wanted to be a film photographer (yes, like the old-school cameras you must load).

What people should know about film photography is that it is a lot more expensive than digital photography. When shooting digital, there is almost zero cost involved, but with film photography, you must pay for the rolls of film and the processing/development. Also, being a film photographer takes a lot of knowledge about lighting and patience. A typical roll of film only has 16 exposures while a 32GB memory card can hold thousands of images; this means when shooting on film you have to get it right the first time or else you are wasting money. These are all reasons why hiring a film photographer will be more expensive than a digital.

I specialize in Fine Art Film Photography (“Fine Art” is just a fancy way of saying I capture what I see in an artistic way). It is my mission to provide each one of my clients with not just a product, but an experience. I primarily shoot weddings, but I also capture engagements, families, seniors, newborns, maternity, and boudoir. From engagement to wedding day, I am in constant communication with my brides – and by the end of it we are close friends (I may or may not cry at every wedding)!! It means so much to me to be more than a vendor to my brides!

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I want to encourage other artists to go for what they want. I spent so much time worrying about what people would think of me becoming a photographer instead of going to medical school. It may have been a 180 in career choices, but it was what I wanted. I left my comfort zone to make it happen, and I have never been so in love with my job! You can do anything you set your mind to. Find your passion and don’t be afraid to go after it!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
