Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKendra King.
LaKendra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At 13, I was tired of my mom doing my hair. I was tender headed, and I started doing my own and practicing on my cousins. When I entered HS, my friends started asking me to do theirs. I loved it so much I started doing hair in my mom’s kitchen for free for the practice, and my mom told me to start charging because I was running up the utilities.
For my sweet sixteen, my mother and grandmother believed in me so much they created a home salon in the back of my mother’s house with all the professional amenities you could think of. After high school, I attended Navarro College in the hopes of obtaining a business management degree. My dream has always been to open my own salon. My junior year in school, my heart, my grandfather passed, and I came back home.
My next move was State Beauty Academy to obtain my cosmetology license. Since obtaining my license, I’ve had many ups and downs in my journey to obtain a storefront. As a licensed cosmetologist, I want to present myself and craft as professionally as possible, and I must admit I like nice things as well. It is still to be manifested.
Has it been a smooth road?
Wow, not by a long shot the road has been bumpy, to say the least. But what about life is smooth. Starting off clientele was scarce. There would be weeks I would only have one client. In the beginning, social media wasn’t as popular, and word of mouth was all I had. At 21, I quit all other income sources and devoted all my time to my craft. My worse enemy was myself, and self doubt and doubting if I was good enough. The encouragement of family and friends and most importantly faith in God has kept me going. Now I know I’ve only just begun.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Haute Headz By Kennie – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Haute Headz by Kennie is my brand, and I came up with that name because what woman doesn’t feel high class after getting slayed by their beautician. I am a well-versed stylist who does it all from my weave extensions, natural hairstyles, braids and I am best known for my precision cut bobs and silk presses. They call me a jack of all trades because I can truly do it all.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
It is my foundation and where my family and friends reside. What I dislike about Dallas there can be a crab in a bucket mentality. They like to see someone doing good as long as no one is doing better than them. If we all reach out a hand behind and pull up the next person, we can all get to where we need to go.
