Today we’d like to introduce you to Phyllis Garrett.
Phyllis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up as a small child, I remember my mother braiding my hair into creative, unique styles that I loved. I would see different braid styles on celebrities such as Allen Iverson and Alicia Keys all the time on television, and I would ask her if she can mimic them. I would always want the more complex designs because I did not want my braids to look like everyone else braids (lol)…
At the age of 13, my mom knew I had a passion for braiding, so she taught me how to do basic braids such cornrows (braids along the scalp) and box braids (single braids). After that, I loved the art of braiding so much that I would braid hair almost anywhere. From Junior High and High School, I braided hair from the cafeterias to the classrooms, and I’ve been braiding ever since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly, this journey has not been smooth at all, but I’ve learned how to find a balance with raising two beautiful children who are the ages three and seven. While pursuing any dream especially as an entrepreneur, it involves hardwork sleepless nights and determination.
However, I often find myself only seeing my children when they wake up in the morning and when I get them ready for school, and off to the babysitter but by the time I finish my clients for the day I only have time to feed them dinner and get them ready for bed.
My support system is who helps me through these emotional times and they constantly remind me of my purpose which is to provide a better life for my children. I would never want them to endure the sacrifices I’ve endured. This is by far the hardest struggle of them all, but I know in the end it will be well worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
P. Rob Braids & Brows specializes in braids, specifically Box Braids. Box Braids are individual braids created by using small pieces of synthetic hair fibers (it can also be done with human hair). This style is fit for any occasion, and the longevity of it is four-six weeks with proper maintenance.
I am known for my ability to grip short hair (as short as two to three inches) and my neatness. My ability to perform braids on any/all textures of hair is what sets me apart from competitors. I am able to give women/men who suffered from hair loss due to chemotherapy treatments, and alopecia a chance at getting braids again which is what I’m most proud of as a company.
Makeup is my second passion, so I decided to expand my business last year by obtaining a certification to perform micrblading. Microblading is a form of semi-permanent tattooing that is done by creating hair like strokes along your eyebrows with ink. This service will last for 18 months to three years with proper maintenance.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, this might be, but I was not girly at all, lol. I was a complete tomboy up until High School, and I loved playing basketball. If I had to describe my personality, I would say I was very outgoing, very intelligent and I took my academics in school very seriously.
I loved fashion, and I still do to this day. I won best dressed in High School my senior year, and I still have a love for fashion to this very day.
