Today we’d like to introduce you to Sue Bacsik.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sue. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My husband and I moved to North Oak Cliff after I graduated medical school. We both had roots here as my mom and both his parents were raised in the area and we love the neighborhood, small town feels of Oak Cliff. After completing my residency at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, I accepted a position in the Newborn Nursery at Parkland Hospital.
I loved serving my community in that setting and gained valuable skills set in addition to practicing pediatric medicine including breastfeeding and lactation support, caring for the medically underserved and working beside some of the BEST doctors at UTSW. In 2011, I made a career change to primary pediatric care at a private practice clinic in North Dallas. While working there, I fell in love with caring for families and watching children grow and thrive.
These few career steps led me to my dream, opening a small, pediatric clinic in North Oak Cliff serving and caring the community and neighbors we have been a part of since 2004. In October of 2018, 14 years after moving to Oak Cliff we opened our doors, and we are excited about caring for the children of Oak Cliff and Dallas.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road was bumpy. Fining office space was a challenge. North Oak Cliff has zoning rules and regulations that makes it difficult to find office space for medical practices. Our original target was the growing and beautiful Bishop Arts area.
What we did not know was that Bishop Arts and surrounding areas would not grant a certificate of occupancy for a medical office unless it was already zoned medical. The doctor’s in this area did not have additional spaces for rent and weren’t planning on moving anytime soon, so we had to start looking outside that zoning area.
Our family friend, AMAZING realtor, and fellow Oak Cliff resident Ged Dipprey found office space just outside the Winnetka Heights zoning area giving us the perfect location to start the clinic. It is only one mile outside our original area however it gives the clinic a neighborhood feel. In fact, a few of our new families can walk to the clinic.
Oak Cliff Pediatrics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Oak Cliff Pediatrics is a pediatric out-patient clinic providing medical care for children (newborn to 18 years old.) We are known for knowing everyone’s names, giving each child individualized medical care and treating every patient like family. I am most proud of the community involvement and support while setting up the clinic and finding the location.
Neighbors and community friends helped us remodel with building, create a beautiful space to practice medicine, move furniture, refer patients, participate in the Grand Opening. When the community surrounds you with love and support, the “ups and downs” of setting up a new business is manageable and enjoyable.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I have a framed quote my mom gave me when I graduated medical school which reads “to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”
This quote is by Ralph Waldo Emerson and my definition of success is the same… if I can leave the world a little bit better, even by helping one child, I have succeeded.
My marker of growth is word of mouth referrals. I know I have made a difference in a family or child’s life when they tell another family about the care they received at Oak Cliff Pediatrics.
