Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Cathey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a behavioral scientist finishing up my doctorate. A few years ago, I realized that I would not be able to create change in the world through academia. I joined a National Science Foundation (NSF) program that trains scientists to build businesses and products from scientific innovation.
This began a journey of turning what we know in behavioral science, that experiences drive our wellness and happiness, into a business. Building this business has been an adventure in self-discovery and human nature. I’ve worked as a therapist and as a scientist to create experiences that help people live better lives, but doing so on the market involves its own set of challenges and victories.
“Evolve” by ENSO Group continues to evolve, as do I, through the relationships and experiences we build in the community. We are proud to offer simple experiences that offer more and more to our clients. Though many might look at our operations and see a simple ‘painting’ company, we’re about creating places for people to become their best ‘self.’
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You can definitely say it has been an interesting road getting here. I’ve experienced many of the challenges that we now address in our ‘Women on Top’ events.
As a female leader, I’ve learned that my ‘word’ counts differently than my male counterparts. I’ve often found that I had to work harder to be heard and deal with many stereotypes about who women are. I’m thankful for it now as it’s been a source of strength to realize that I am able to innovate and succeed independently.
As a female founder myself, these experiences have given me a passion for inspiring other female founders and leaders. In the ‘Women on Top’ experiences, we try to create brief experiences that fuel women’s drive and recognition of their own inner strength in the face of adversity.
Evolve by ENSO Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Evolve by ENSO Group (www.ensogroup.us) is a business that creates brief perspective shifting experiences. We are not your average ‘paint and drink’ type of company. We select art, music, and exercises based on a particular topic and build an ‘experience.’
The idea of building an ‘experience’ in order to improve lives in itself sets us apart from the crowd; however, we continuously improve these experiences based on customer feedback. We’re proud that we’re always evolving as we help others ‘evolve.’
When you come for an ‘experience,’ you will find an event that is about feeling and ‘experiencing’ the world or yourself differently. We create works of art that are fun, listen to music, and do brief exercises (e.g., minute meditations). It’s about mind opening fun and creating as a part of that experience. We strive to have our customers leave inspired by themselves and the world, if only briefly.
For example, in our ‘Women on Top’ events, we show representations of how society sees and treats women, and we listen to music that evokes female power. Women can briefly share about their experiences as women and leaders, if they so choose, or simply create a piece of art that reminds them of their power.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career thus far been creating ‘Women on Top’ and seeing how it affects women to take part in these experiences. We’re experiencing a new awakening of women’s rights and strength in our culture. Creating this experience is, in part, a dedication to my daughter’s role in the world.
In a world where she will constantly be seen as a ‘princess,’ I want her to know that she’s all that and more. I want her to understand that her place in the world is so much larger than what the world will tell her. I want that for all women, and creating this experience is the first step in my journey towards building a world that recognizes and grows the strengths in others.
