Art & Life with Mariah Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Powell.

Mariah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Modeling was something I’ve always thought and talked about but never thought I could actually pursue until about a year ago. It started as another creative outlet and a way to build self-confidence that flourished into something I truly love doing. In the beginning, I reached out to a local photographer to do a shoot, and from there began networking and immersing myself in this community full of wonderful creatives.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As of right now, I am a freelance model. Like I said I started mostly out of curiosity, but it quickly became something I’m passionate about. I want to create artworks that are, not only beautiful but interesting, thought-provoking and inspiring to fellow creatives. I want to build a platform to connect with others to learn and grow and experiment with different art forms as well as take time to further learn about myself and build strong friendships and networking connections with fellow creatives.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I believe that it has become easier in recent years because of social media and the reach that it gives you, but it still has some drawbacks. Now more than ever you are able to connect with practically anyone who has access to an internet connection and shares your interests which is monumental in terms of networking, inspiration, and collaboration between creatives. However, there are still faults in the way art is portrayed to the public. Often times people are very quick to praise artwork but completely forget about all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Highlighting the team, such as stylists and hair/makeup artists, that helped bring a concept to life is important because they are a vital part of the creation process.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
For now, I just do freelance modeling and showcase my portfolio on Instagram. I love working with new people and am open to people reaching out to collaborate.
