Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Wright.
Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a child, I could only dream of visiting Disney World. I believe that is why seeing it for the first time, through my little girl’s eyes, was so very special to me. Our family experiences a joy like no other when we travel to Disney World, which is why we’ve been going every year since my girls can remember. The excitement and pleasure that I get out of planning and vacationing to the most magical place on Earth is unexplainable and I hope to pass that onto my friends and family by making this dream a reality for them and their children.
I started out by looking for something to fill my time during the day while my girls were in school. I have girlfriends who sell a number of different products from their homes, but none of those things interested me and I found myself searching for something, but just didn’t know what it was. I wanted to do something that I was passionate about and found a sense of accomplishment in.
I always have friends, neighbors, family members asking me millions of Disney vacation related questions. Answering these questions and having discussions about our adventures always gave me such excitement and joy, I began to think to myself… “how can I turn this into a job?” I then reached out to an old friend, who had always wanted to book my trips for me, and that’s how it all started! I am now 9 months into Wright Sisters and have been told that I’m the fastest growing agent that my host agency, Magical Mouse Trips, has had since they’ve opened their doors in 2009. What started out as a passion and a hobby, has quickly turned in to a small business that keeps this mama plenty busy, while still having time to be a wife and mommy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, finding work/life balance was challenging. My family used to get my full attention at all times, but my business started growing rapidly right from the beginning. After a couple of months, you find your way and are able to adjust your daily schedule to make time for everyone, especially that much needed personal attention that your loved ones need.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a personal travel planner for Disney vacations including: Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Lines, Aulani A Disney Resort and Spa, and Adventures by Disney. Like most travel agents, my services are free to my clients, I am paid directly through Disney. I book the family’s vacation based on their desires, budget, and special needs, then plan out the entire trip for them. Planning a Disney vacation, especially in the parks, can be overwhelming to those who have never experienced it before. I visit Disney’s parks and resorts often, receive emails on promotions that the public may not know about yet, read blogs, and love to research all that is up and coming. So, I’m basically a Disney vacation specialist and my clients are able to benefit from that with no cost to them. Each family has their own needs, wants, likes, hobbies, and I’m able to help each and every one of them find activities, resorts, parks, foods, shows, rides, and characters that they are interested in.
Seeing the children’s, and parents, smiling faces in The Most Magical Place on Earth gives me such an overwhelming joy! My passion has become my job, I really don’t feel like it’s work at all!
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
With all of the different social media outlets, I feel like being able to work from home and run your own small business is easier than ever before. Get the kids off to school, then spend your time promoting yourself online and making connections with friends of friends. It’s so easy to spread the word nowadays, there’s no reason that you can’t be a mom, a wife, a sister, a daughter, and a small business owner!
