Meet Rolando Galvan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rolando Galvan.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My interest in photography began when I was 16 during the summer. I`m not sure why I wanted a camera so bad, but I needed it in my hands. I begged my parents to buy me my first camera, and eventually, they cave in. Afterward, I would bring my camera through my local travels. I Started shooting nature and architecture, but it was only a hobby. It was until my senior year that a competition came up called VASE, and I decided to enter. I wanted to use portraits to try something new, so I went out and looked for friends to shoot with. I am an introvert, so I did not know many people and felt really uncomfortable asking. After shooting about 30 people DM`s if they wanted to shoot, two amazing people agreed which possibly started a new beginning. I fell in love with portraits, and have been doing it ever since. Honestly, it`s so amazing how life unfolds itself because I almost could not enter the competition because of my grades. I had an amazing photography teacher to guide me throughout my high school years, and hope I can do this for a living.

Please tell us about your art.
To say the obvious, I am a portrait photographer. I base my photographs off feeling, music, emotion, beauty, simplicity and anything else you may gain from it. We are all different human beings, and to show who I am, I have to be myself. If I do not express my universe, then I`d be just another local photographer. My photographs represent my feelings that I have felt before. There are glimpse of sadness, grief, hope, joy, all which I have experienced before and will continue to do so. My goal is for the audience to connect with my photographs and take away something beautiful. Everyone goes through emotions whether they are good or bad, and it would make me happy if people can attach themselves to my photographs and never let go. There are too many people doing similar styles, and if I want to flourish, then I have to present something unique, which is me.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
In my fully honest opinion to help other creatives who are pursuing similar paths, you will need to compromise. I have slowly been finding out that the high-class equipment may require less energy, while low-class equipment may require more. There are creatives out there who use beginner DSLR`s, and their work is far beyond my skill. But there are also creative with professional DSLR`s, and their work is that with any others. It`s about how you approach the process from beginning to end. Find in the equipment and yourself to see what you can push forward, then find the weak points and see what you can fix. It may require some skill in photoshop or extra lighting; whatever it is, you can find a creative way to go around the financial aspect of things and flourish your work. I also, recommend Youtube tutorials. Maybe before you go to sleep, instead of ASMR, watch some tutorials. There are professional photographers giving free advice for any creature that needs it.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see my work on my Instagram page “@rolandogalvan_” which is where I mainly post my photographs. I`m working on my website, and I hope it will be released to the public soon. For now, my Instagram page is where I showcase all my work. So I need everyone to give me a glimpse of their energy and support me.
