Meet Jermar Johnson of JermarDerun in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermar Johnson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jermar. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I first started creating art in 2015. When I was a child, my goal was to be a businessman as well as a creator or entertainer or some sort. I’ve always gravitated towards artistry. As I grew older, I typically shied away from it because I felt as if I wasn’t creative and skilled enough.

As I grew older, I went to college for business but couldn’t finish due to affordability if tuition. I was in search of something that I had an initial passion for, and I could utilize as a trade. Art was that thing that could never let me go, it was like I was chosen by it!

In March of 2015, I bought my first set of art supplies, got on YouTube, learned the basics and vowed to be a student of my passion. So far, painting has opened up several opportunities for me. In 2017, I packed my belongings and impulsively moved to Dallas Tx from Memphis, TN and never looked back.

Since being dedicated to my passion, I have been able to expand my brand, be featured in Dallas’ top art shows, nevertheless find myself and connect with others through paintings. “A piece of my personality is hidden in each and every one of my paintings.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Painting has not always been a smooth road. Although, it was harder to pick up a paintbrush in the first place. I have dealt with many issues such as creative’s block, inability to deliver, as well as a house fire that destroyed quite a bit of my work that I created earlier in my career. I look at the trying times that I’ve been through as just part of the journey! If you use self-determination, personal will, focus and as a vehicle to get to your goal nothing can stop or deter you!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is JermarDerun LLC. I have two sub-brands which are Artofjermarderun as well as GrandEats. I specialize in Artistry as well as food blogging, culinary arts, etc. I am most known for acrylic artwork as well as resin, glitter, woodwork, and any skill I can learn.

I’m most proud of my ability to show off my personality and passion in two of the most important things in my life. What sets me apart from others is my “Why.”

As an artist I want my peers as well as people who come after me to understand that just because a talent isn’t “God-Gifted” doesn’t mean you can’t work hard at it and master it, I also want people to understand that you don’t have to be boxed in by anyone’s standards. Stay true to your being and make a living by what you love!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very different. As a military child who spent half of my childhood in Germany, I was able to not only being exposed to, but I was adapted to a different kind of culture originally. My interests were only subject to sports, tree climbing, mountain climbing, as well as arts and crafts.
