Today we’d like to introduce you to Broderick Perkins.
B.I.P. is an Alternative Hip Hop artist that blends the sounds of Jazz, Funk, Gospel, and Soul in to form his signature sound. Located in Dallas, Texas his pursuit of music all started in his cousin’s apartment when he was 13. There his cousin Moses, a future member of the Billboard charted group “Cadillac Muzik”, shared with him mixing and production tools, which sparked a love for music that changed his life forever. His newfound love for music and passion for poetry were the perfect match and B.I.P. began honing his skill as a producer. Above all, though B.I.P. is a lyricist, and through his music, he endeavors to paint relatable pictures, be transparent, and confront social and spiritual issues head-on. In March of 2018, he performed at SXSW Music and Film Festival in Austin at the Kingdom Experience. His Free Album, “Senior Year” made University of North Texas’s Facebook page, His Album “A Mulatto’s Diary” made Christ in Hip Hop’s Top 10 Albums of 2017, taking the #8 spot! Reaching 4K+ monthly listeners on Spotify, added to Christian Hip Hop Playlists & Top 2018-2019 Hit Playlists!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The obstacles and challenges that have been faced along this road have been getting music into the rights hands, as far as marketing myself, getting streams, purchases online, and getting people to get behind your movement. People need something to believe in and something tangible! Once they see your success, the rest is history; that’s when people will follow! People WANT a success story to be able to say they witnessed it!
The talent has always been there it is just a matter of time for exposure.
Fatigue has also been a hard challenge. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, an auto-immune disease which targets your pancreas cells causing you to become insulin dependent. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while focusing on my craft has been quite the ride!
Please tell us about your work.
I am an Independent Artist. The things that I specialize in are producing, mixing vocals and instruments, and songwriting. Producing is way different than beat-making. Producing tells a story; it’s an emotional journey you venture into. Its colliding piano keys with guitar chords. It’s feeling the bassline that vibrates and shakes your soul! It’s the violin that causes you to close your eyes and meditate.
I am known for my witty lyricism, passionate delivery, and heart for social injustice and spiritual issues the world faces. Much compared to artists like J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar as far as story-telling, deep thoughts, and dense quotes that make you think! Music is like a puzzle that gives the listeners the chance to put the masterpiece together.
I am so proud to have accomplish goals such as SXSW Musical and Film Festival, reach many Spotify playlists, get the album, “Senior Year” on University of North Texas’ Facebook page, and receive a spot on Christ in Hip Hop’s Top 10 Albums of 2017 for the album, “A Mulatto’s Diary.”
What sets me apart is the fact that I can engineer my music, produce my own music with musicians, and on top of that have the ability to write songs! I can create what I want when I want without relying on many people! You get quality and substance! I do not want to follow waves of music like the radio and YouTube rappers who are in it for a buck! It’s the type of music that has longevity, consistency, and in the long run, establish a solid fanbase! Another thing that sets me apart is that I don’t have to boast, brag, flaunt, and say, “I am a Legend” or “I am the best!” I just want to create something. If you like it, you like it. If you don’t, you don’t. I have no control over opinions!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I would have learned how to play instruments such as piano, guitar, saxophone, and other instruments at a young age. I am still learning music theory but I have a good ear!
But I try not to think what if because if I never experienced the route that I’m taking, I would not have made it where I am today.
