Meet Tina Norris and Mark Maloney of 3 Vino Winery in Roanoke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Norris and Mark Maloney.

Tina and Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Mark is a born and raised Texan and I’m a native of Alaska. Although Mark and I have different backgrounds, we both enjoy wine and the congenial atmosphere of a comfortable wine bar. With that in mind, we set out to create a unique venue where you can experience a remarkable wine selection in a relaxed setting. We took Roanoke’s original switchboard operator building and turned it into a destination we would want to frequent with our friends and family. From there, we started planning a menu, furnishings and entertainment options that we felt would make experiencing wine fun for the novice or the veteran.

We’re just one short block off of Oak Street where all the restaurants are located. Since we’re in the heart of The Unique Dining Capital of Texas, we decided to do our part in supporting our restaurant neighbors by allowing our customers to order from local restaurants and have it delivered to our place. We call it “BYOF”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Mark and I comment regularly on how fortunate we are to be surrounded by good people. That goes for our staff, our distributors and our customers. They have made our first 2 years successful and enjoyable. We feel that everyone is our customer – whether they work with us, or we serve them. If we keep excellent customer service at the forefront it helps us make sound business decisions and stay relevant.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about 3 Vino Winery – what should we know?
With close to 100 wines on our menu we carry distinguished wines such as Caymus, Silver Oak, Cakebread and Prisoner and also boutique favorites such as Jamieson Ranch and Runquist. We serve flights of wine for those that want to find their new favorite wine. We also serve by the glass or by the bottle. If you’re on the run, you can stop by and use us as your specialty retail wine store. We’re constantly updating our menu to bring our guests the newest wines from remarkable winemakers or our favorite new limited-release gems. Our building and outdoor patio area make you feel at home whether you’re sitting inside or enjoying music and a game of cornhole on the patio. Our goal is for all of our guests to enjoy wine in a way that is memorable for them.

Soon after opening we recognized there is a real need for party space. Sometimes you want to meet up with friends over wine but you just don’t want to clean the house or do the shopping. Or maybe you want to have a cozy bridal shower in a central location where you can enjoy the event and not worry about serving your guests. We’ve created a place for people to enjoy old friends, make new ones and celebrate momentous occasions. Whether it’s a small group that wants to come in during normal hours and celebrate a promotion, a pre-planned marriage proposal or a company that has rented the winery for a team meeting – we can help make your event special

It would make sense that people assume our business is wine. But we feel our business is all about relationships. If you’re new to 3 Vino, we’re cultivating one. If you’re a regular, we’re nurturing one. People want to feel welcome, comfortable and appreciated. So, everything from our business model to our menu selections, tasting events and entertainment is built around delivering an unparalleled wine experience. If you’re knowledgeable about wine and just want to explore new vintages, we’ll bring out our favorites for you to try. If you are new to wine, we’ll help you understand what the wine descriptors mean and how to communicate what you do/don’t like in a flavor profile.

Our pricing is very reasonable and you’ll often find that our drink-in bottle price is competitive with retail pricing. Again, it all comes back to creating relationships and we absolutely cannot do so based on one-time visits.

Our building and outdoor patio area make you feel at home whether you’re sitting inside or enjoying music and a game of cornhole on the patio. Our goal is for all of our guests to enjoy wine in a way that is memorable for them.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We would be amiss if we didn’t recognize the contribution and support from our significant others and our families. Starting a new venture requires a great time commitment, as you can imagine, and our families have been tremendously supportive. They’re some of our best marketers, although I wasn’t quite sure what to think when I found out my son had been handing out business cards at his elementary school. “Teachers need wine, too”, he said. Makes sense…
